1st Assignment

Today I am starting with an important paper for you to summarize titled “Economics verse
Politics: Pitfalls of Policy Advice”.
You are required to write (not more than) 3 page summary (single space, font size 12),
containing meaningful extract from the paper. The summary should be focused and should
objectively summarize the discussion in the paper. The summary should exhibit your
understanding (from the paper) about questions like 
1. Different discourses on fusion of politics and economics?
2. Does politics leads to better economic decision-making?
3. Economic rents versus economic needs: How do politics play a role?
4. Political Consequences of Inequality
5. To what degree the discussion in the paper is relevant to Pakistan?

2nd Assignment

The second assignment is to deliberate on an important question which is very much highlighted in the
current days, “Help the Poor”; “Feed the Poor”. Have you thought, WHY???? Why should the Society,
Government, State bother about these “Have nots”. It is an important Policy matter. So let us think about
it. The question that I want you to investigate and produce a term paper on is:

1. Is inequality harmful to Economic Growth?

2. Can helping the poor help in having sustained growth and development?

You should do research on this topic and produce a term paper, having 5000 words (max). The summary
should focus on the given questions and debate the topic as a policy matter (avoiding
socialist/journalist/generalist discussion). I am attaching two pieces as a starter (focus on debate and
discussion, instead of equations).

It carries 8 marks
