7. Society may stereotype persons based on the way they speak and the language they use.

Society may think of creole as impolite and informal and may see persons who use it as vulgar

and uneducated. If a person only speaks creole, it is assumed that they are from the rural areas

and are poverty-stricken. However for Standard Engli,mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmnksh, it’s

the opposite. It is seen as formal and used by educated, sophisticated persons. If a person only

speaks in Standard English, society assumes that the person is wealthy and lives in the urban

areas. Also, if a person is in a rural area (where everyone speaks creole) and they speak Standard

English, the person may be seen as boastful or it may be assumed that they are “twanging”.
