Among the factors that shaped it were the development of modern industrial societies and the rapid growth of cities ,followed by the reactions to the horrors of World War 1 which made people desperate and hopeless and that was reflected in the literature and art .Modernism, in general, reflects a departure from traditional forms of art ,religion ,philosophy ,and social organization ,and daily life which modernist artists felt had become expired in the new environments of an emerging industrialized world. The modern poet Ezra pound's famous phrase "make it New" was the touchstone of the movement's approach towards what it saw as the absolute culture of the past . The second important characteristic is that modernism also rejected religious beliefs due to the fatal consequences of Darwinism. Modernism, in the fine arts, a break with the past and the concurrent search for new forms of expression. Modernism fostered a period of experimentation in the arts from the late 19th to the mid- 20th century, particularly in the years following World War I.
