Knowing the field density and field moisture content, the dry density is calculated. Therefore, field density test is importance as a field control test for the compaction of pavement layer. The basic principle of sand replacement method is to measure the in-situ volume of hole from which the material was excavated from the weight of sand with known density filling in the hole, The in-situ density of material is given by the weight of the excavated material divided by the in- situ volume, MCM CO.,LTD is constructing the Urgent Rehabilation and Upgrade Project at Hlawga Township, Yangon Region. Therefore, TECHNO STRENGTH ENGINEERING (TSE) Co., Ltd. was assigned to conduct the soil in place test to determine the density by sand replacement method. 2.SCOPE OF WORK The scope of works were, - Mobilisation/Transportation of Equipment and Personnel to the site - Perform Sand Cone test at designated locations and/or obtaining a soil sample dig the test hole through the center hole in the base plate and subsequent activities for the determination of in-place density. - Preparation and submission of factual report on the result of sand cone test. A.TEST APPARATUS, Sand Cone Density Apparatus — consist of a container for the calibrated sand; a conical, stopeock- controlled outlet; and a base plate, The base of the conical outlet shall have a nominal interior diameter of 6 in, (150mm), and shall be flared flat to fit the base plate. The base plate and container are matched and fitted. Sand Container — sand container having a volume capacity in excess of that required to fill the test hole and sand cone during the test. ‘Sand Cone — consist of a cylindrical valve with an orifice approximately 13 mm. in diameter, attached to a metal funnel and sand container on one end, and a large metal funnel on the other end. Base Plate ~ a metal base plate with a flanged center hole cast to receive the large funnel, ‘Sand ~Clean dry sand, Standard Thilawa Sand. Balance — 5 g readability, to determine the mass of sand and excavated soils. Page 1 > lz “TSES TECHNO STRENGTH ENGINEERING C' O:1 4.METHOD A test hole is hand excavated in the soil to be tested and all the material from the hole is saved ina container. The hole is filled with free flowing sand of a known density, and the volume is determined, The in-place wet density of the soil is determined by dividing the wet mass of the removed material by the volume of the hole. The water content of the material from the hole is determined and the dry mass of the material and the in-place dry density are calculated using the wet mass of the soil, the water content, and the volume of the hole. This test method is follow by ASTM D 1557 for modified proctor test and ASTM D 1556 for field density test (sand cone method), 4.1. ASTM D 1557, Modified Proctor Test: ~ A soil at a selected water content is placed in five layers into a mold of given dimensions, with each layer compacted by 25 blows of a 10-Ibf (44.5-N) rammer dropped from a distance of 18-in. (457-mm), subjecting the soil to a total compactive effort of about 56 000 ft—Ibfift?(2700 kN-mvm’). - The resulting dry unit weight is determined. The procedure is repeated for a sufficient number of wate contents to establish a relationship between the dry unit weight and the water content for the soil. ~ This data, when plotted, represent a curvilinear relationship known as the compaction curve. ~The values of optimum water content and modified maximum dry unit weight are determined from the ‘compaction curve. 4.2. ASTM D 1556, Density and Unit weight of Soil in place by the sand cone method: - The representative test area shall be selected - Prepare the surface of the location to be tested, so that itis a level plane, Seat the base plate on the surface around the edge of the flanged center hole. - Dig the test hole through the center hole in the base plate. Place all excavated soil, and any soil loosened during digging, in a moisture tight container that is marked to identify the test umber. Take care to avoid losing any materials. - The removing soil material from test hole put into the plastic bag to protect moisture loss. ~ After standard sand fill into the jug, sand cone apparatus invert and seat into the test hole. = Open the valve and allow the sand to fill the hole, funnel, and base plate. When the sand stops flowing, close the valve. - Determine and record the remaining sand in sand cone apparatus, mass of the removing soil material from test hole and water content of the removing soil material from test hole. S.CALCULATION - Calculation shown are for mass in grams and volumes in cubic centimeters. - Calculate the dry mass of removed materials from the test hole as follows: 100 m, /w +100 m, = mass of removed materials w = moisture content Page 2 CSE IsE TECHNO STRENGTH ENGINEERING CO, - Calculate the volume of the test hole as follows: mass of sand in test hole yuk density of sand ~ Calculate the in place wet and dry density of the materials as follows: ass of remove materials 1m. = dry mass of remove materials Vy = volume of test hole = Calculate the mass of sand in test hole as follows: my = mass of sand in hole & funnel mg = mass of sand in required to fill the funnel 6.
