Did you know that chocolate has an interesting history? Chocolate comes from the beans
of the cacao tree. The Olmecs, an ancient civilization, probably made the first chocolate drink.
They ground cacao beans and added water to the ground beans to make a drink. They called
this drink xocolatl, which is the origin of the word chocolate.
In the sixteenth century, a famous Spanish explorer, Hernan Cortes, brought chocolate
back from the Americas to Spain. Drinking chocolate soon became very popular in Europe.
Three hundred years later, a scientist in Holland learned how to make chocolate into candy.
Today chocolate is one of the most popular and best-loved foods in the world.

Mom : Hi, Alex. Are you busy today, kids?
Alex : Hi, Mrs. Sanders. No, were just hanging out.
Mom : Great. Joe can run to the supermarket for me then.
Joe : Me? Go to the supermarket? Come on, Mom. Ask Diane!
Alex : Its OK, Joe. Ill go with you.
Mom : Thanks, Alex. I need bread, milk, eggs, juice, cheese, and hamk
Joe : Whoa, Mom. Let me write those down. How much of each do we need?
Mom :Lets start from the top. One loaf of bread, a gallon of milk, a dozen eggs, a
half gallon of orange juice, and a half pound each of cheese and ham.
Joe : Mom, slow down! OK. What else?
Mom : One roasting chicken, one bag of onions, six tomatoes, a head of lettuce, and a bunch of
carrots.
Joe :Let me repeat what you just said: chicken, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, carrots,
chips, and ice cream.
Mom : Good try, Joe. I think we have enough junk food in the house!

Grace : Hi, Rick.
Rick : Hi, Grace.
Grace : Youre looking good these days. Are you in love?
Rick : No, silly.
Grace : Then whats your secret?
Rick : A lot of exercise.
Grace : Really? How much exercise do you do every day?
Rick : Well, I do a lot of sit-ups and a few push-ups in the morning. Then I jog on the
treadmill for about 30 minutes.
Grace : Wow. You have such good self-discipline, Rick. You can never make me do
anything in the morning, except eat breakfast. So, are you on a diet, too?
Rick : I hate dieting. There are a lot of crazy diet ideas around.
Grace : I know. Its so confusing. Like, one diet plan says, Eat a lot of meat, and then
another one says, Dont eat any meat. I think thats crazy.
Rick : I eat whatever I like. But I dont eat too much of anything.
Grace : I know. I know. Discipline again. Oh, well. So what are you up to now?
Rick : Im on my way to the gym. Wanna come?
Grace : No. The couch is waiting for me at home.

Welcome to this years gathering of the best in teen fashion. It seems everybodys here. Theres
Teen Fashions editor; and is that Dina Windsor of Hip magazine? Welcome, everybody. OK, Lets
get rolling.
Our fist model, Scott, is wearing a winter creation for men by Tim Hill. Scott is wearing a yellow
scarf against a black winter jacket. Notice Scotts pumpkin-orange sweater, gray gloves, gray socks,
and black dress shoes. Tim Hill did it again with his usual daring colors!
Our second model is lovely Melissa. Melissa is all ready for a summer outing. Shes wearing a sky-
blue top, a denim skirt, knock-out sandals, and a gorgeous hat. This outfit is by Carolina Guerrera.
Wow. I like that look, Bruce very sporty, very springy. Bruce is wearing a yellow windbreaker, a
baseball cap, T-shirt, loose jeans, and sneakers. Thats a sweatshirt on his shoulder. As you can see,
Bruce is all set for spring.
And finally, our last model is Terry. Terrys modeling this years popular fall clothes by BNX.
Thats a beautiful little black dress, Terry. It goes very well with those black tights and red coat.
That pretty black hat and those boots definitely make a statement. Great outfit, Terry.

Mom: what are you doing in the attic, Diane?
Diane: Looking at old photographs. Mom, I can’t believe you looked like this
20 years ago.
Mom: Why? How did I look?
Diane: Funny. Look at your hairstyle. You were really weird. When was this?
Mom: What are you looking at? My goodness. Those are my old pictures!
Diane: You really looked funny, Mom!
Mom: Yeah, those clothes look funny now. But they were cool during our time.
Diane: I’d die before I’d wear them. So what styles are these and from what
year?
Mom: Let me see. Those are bell bottoms I’m wearing I loved those pants.
That’s my best friend. She’s wearing a miniskirt with go-go boots.
That’s the peace sign on her shirt. Your Aunt Mildred is wearing pedal
pushers. That’s Grandma in her pantsuit. We really looked awful in
those clothes.
Diane: Not really, Mom. You were kind of cute. Except for the hairstyle. And
look at these colors! Eww! Can I borrow these, Mom, for our project,
“The Way We Were?”
We won’t laugh, I promise.

Yesterday was terrible. It was hot, hot, hot in Sa~o Paulo. Now, lets see how the weather is in

We were walking home from a party. It wasnt raining when we left the party, so we decided
to walk. We were crossing 72nd Street, when suddenly, we heard somebody call for help.
We looked around and saw a man lying on the sidewalk. We were scared, but we didnt want
to leave the man. We knew that he was hurt and needed help. My friend Alex called 911.
While we were waiting for the ambulance, it started to rain a little. We put a jacket over the man.
When the ambulance arrived, we told the EMS worker what happened. He told us to go to the
police station and report the incident.

Alex: Are you mad at me, Lori?
Lori: Should I be?
Alex: I dont know, but I think you are.
Lori: Tell me. Why did Paul choose you? Does he really think that youre the best in the group? And why
didnt he tell the group about it?
Alex: I dont know why Paul chose me for the summer program in Michigan, Lori. I cant say Im better
than anyone else.
Lori: Im sorry, Alex. I worked as hard as you did on that shoe, maybe even harder.
Alex: I know that, Lori. Look, youre the best singer in the group. You have a great voice. Why dont you
talk to Paul? Im sure he can explain.
Lori: Maybe later. Can we talk about something else? What time are Joe and Diane meeting us?

Museum Guide: If you follow me, ladies and gentlemen, we will now move on to the audiovisual
room to watch a video of the rest of the seven ancient wonders of the world.
Video Narrator: The Temple of Artemis will forever be a symbol of beauty and perfection. It was
made of marble. It served as a marketplace and a religious institution. This ancient temple continues to inspire
architects for its architectural beauty. A man named Herostratus burned the temple to the ground because he
wanted people to remember his name forever.
This next ancient wonder, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, is the burial place for a king called
Mausollos. These days, the word mausoleum means a large stone building with several graves. The
mausoleum has a rectangular shape. The burial area is decorated with gold and surrounded by lonic columns.

Paul: Whats the matter? A new script used to make you happy.
Lori: I have a headache.
Paul: You should go home and rest then. Maybe take some aspirin.
Lori: Paul, can I ask you something?
Paul: Sure.
Lori: Why did you choose Alex for the summer program in Michigan? Why didnt you give me
a chance?
Paul: Im sorry, Lori, but Alex was the best candidate for it. The program director asked for
a male performer.
Lori: Is that the reason? I feel ridiculous. Im sorry, Paul.
Paul: I understand how you feel, Lori. I used to get upset about these kinds of things, too.
Lori: Thanks for understanding, Paul.

Karen: Mom, why does Grandma always say, In my day, we used to do this, and we
used to be like that.
Mrs. Jackson: Someday, Karen, youll say the same thing.
Karen: Yeah. Ill tell my children, When I was your age, I used to baby-sit to earn
money. What did you use to do when you were my age?
Mrs. Jackson: Well, we didnt have a lot of money. We had no car, so we used to walk to
school even on snowy days. We had no television set, and we didnt go to the
movies. To entertain the family, your Grandpa used to tell us kids stories about
the war and the Great Depression.
Karen: Oh, no. Not those stories. Those stories are always so sad. Was life really that
difficult during those days?
Mrs. Jackson: Well, life wasnt easy for my parents. Even our life after that period wasnt easy,
but we kids felt safe. Our parents were not as busy as your Dad and I are today.
The family always had dinner together. When was the last time our family sat
down together at the dinner table?
Karen: Hmm, I wonder what I will tell my children someday. When I was your age,
I only had a computer, a cell phone, a television in my roomk
