‘Everybody is talking about the reconstruction our enemies have their schemes for a new order
in Europe maintained by their secret police and we on our side talk of rebuilding London or
England or Western Civilization and we make plans how this is to be done
I met Germans who had been fighting castes I shouldn’t try to love them I shouldn’t feel
inclined. They have broken a window in my little ugly flat for one thing but I shall try to tell
tolerate them because it is a common sense, because in the postwar world we shall have to
live with Germans .we can’t exterminate them than they have succeeded in exterminating the
jews. ‘
1. In this essay "Tolerance", the writer highlights the value of tolerance during the
reconstruction of the world after World War II. According to the writer two things are
needed for the reconstruction of European nation.
2. First, the sound state of mind and second is tolerance. Most of the people think that
world can be reconstructed on the basis of love and with sound state of mind But
according to the writer love is a private virtue. It has nothing to do with public affairs.
The writer says that we cannot love our enemies.
3. He points out that only tolerance can bring people together. It is a positive value or
virtue.
4. The world is full of people who dislike one another's cast, colour, dress and religion.
5. Montaigne, John Locke, Sydney, Smith, Goethe, and Asoka were in the favour of
tolerance, while St. Paul and Dante were not in the favour of tolerance.
6. Tolerance does not mean surrender.
7. According to the writer tolerance is a suitable principle to put up with others.
