Introduction to Numerical Control of Machines 7
hn) Flexibility in Changes of Component Design
he modification or changes in component design can be readily
commodated by re-programming and altering the concerned
instructions. There are nosjigs and fixture to be altered, hence,
avings are effected in time and cost.
i) Reduced Inspection
he time spent on inspection and in waiting for inspection to
egin is greatly reduced. Normally, it is necessary to inspect the
frst component only. If there is any difference in the dimensions
f the machined component, the programme is checked and cor-
ected, if needed.
j) Less Scrap
ince the operator errors are eliminated; a proven part
rogramme results in an accurate component. However, tool set-
ings, as in a boring bar, do not come under the control of the part
rogramme and periodic checks must be made to ensure that the
ettings remain correct. Drill or tap breakages are not unknown,
ut since the tools are operating under controlled optimum condi-
ions, the incidence of breakages should be very small.
) Accurate Costing and Scheduling
in CNC machines, the time taken in machining is predictable,
jonsistent and results in a greater. accuracy in estimating and
ore consistency in costing. Consistent operation enables the *
ecurate compilation of shop loading schedules and thus results
a balanced loading and a more predictable output.
ISADVANTAGES OF CNC MACHINES
\
s with every system, the CNC systems too have certain disad-
intages which are given below:
.) Higher Investment Cost
NC machine tools represent a more sophisticated and complex
chnology. This technology costs more to buy than its non - CNC
unterpart. The higher cost requires manufacturing manage-
ent to use these machines more aggressively than ordinary
juipment. High machine utilization is essential in order to get
asonable returns on investment. Machine shops must operate
cir CNC machines two or three shifts per day to achieve this
igh utilization.
