Reflection #5

Culture is the distinguishing mark of the Filipinos but there are issues concerning certain
cultural practices. These are: (1)Filipino Indolence (2) "Ningas-Cugon" Attitude (3) "Mañana
Habit" Attitude (4) "Bahala na" Attitude (5) Indulging in Gambling (6) "Hiya" Complex (7)
Amor Propio (8) "Lagay" and "Areglo (9) "Palakasan" Scheme (10) Use of Euphemistic
Expression (11) The "Suerte", "Tadhana", "Malas", and Buena Form of Fatalism (12) The
Existence of Spirits, Ghost and Supernatural Beings (13) The Gaya-Gaya Practice (14) Karma.

In general, Filipinos care about other people's opinions. Consciously or unconsciously,

Filipinos do their best to look good in front of others or to leave a good impression. Having this
is actually a good thing but when given too much emphasis on, it would be destructive. Some
even borrow money just so they can keep the impression that they are rich when they're not. One
has to be with the trend and tend to copy what other people are doing. When people see that
selling street foods earns quite the income, they also start doing the same thing. This is mutually
destructive. We believe that impression is good but it is also important to keep in mind that one
cannot please everyone. Trying to achieve perfection in everybody's eyes is an impossible thing.
Then again, this is something engraved in us, it is not easy to change it.

Filipinos are also lazy. There are Filipinos who has the happy go lucky or go with the flow
attitude that's why there are a lot of out of school adolescents anywhere. Or if they do something,
they would procrastinate. This is specifically true for a lot of us students. It is an attitude that one
wants to change but has never been easy to do. Gambling is also something people are addicted
to. Older ones play majong, sabong or card games like tong-its. and this is specially bad for
young adults because it is addicting. But with the older ones doing it, it creates an endless cycle
of gambling problems. Gambling problems of Filipinos is closely related to their beliefs of luck.
The term "maybe" is a big fatality to people. Filipinos, even when the have just enough money
for their needs, pays for a lotto ticket because "maybe" it would bring them more money.
Filipinos actually don't realize that the probability of them winning in lotto is so small that the
amount they paid for the ticket actually exceeds that of their wins.
Another negative attitude is the use of "connections". Instead of using their skills, people
sometimes use their connections to get a good paying job. This is very unfair and is among the
factors that caused poverty. The rich ones who have connections can land on a good paying job
while poor people who are better qualified does not. It robs people the opportunity to showcase
what they can do.

No culture is perfect, and ours is no different. What makes a difference is when we do

something to at least to be conscious of these things and try to avoid doing it. Balance is always
important in whatever aspect of life, and striking the perfect balance in our decisions in life will
create a better future for the country.
