Chapter 3: Review questions

1. A stone is projected horizontally with velocity 3.0 m/s from top of a vertical

cliff 200 m high. Calculate

(a) how long it takes to reach the ground,

(b) its distance from the foot of the cliff,

(c) its vertical and horizontal components of velocity when it hits the ground.

Neglect air resistance.

2. A ball is to be kicked so that, at the highest point of its path, it just clears a
fence a few metres away. The ground level and the fence is 2.2 m high. The ball
is kicked from the ground level with an initial velocity of 8.0 m/s at an angle
α to the horizontal. Air resistance is to be neglected.

(a) show that, if the ball just clears the fence, he angle of projection α must
be 55° .

(b) Find the horizontal velocity of the ball as it passes over the fence.

(c) Calculate the total time for which the ball is in air from the instant it is
2
kicked until it reaches the ground.(g=9.8 m/s )

3. If you are walking at constant velocity of 5 km/h and a car passed you by at
the speed of 20 km/h from behind, what is the car's velocity from your
viewpoint?

4. If you are running at constant velocity of 5 m/s, what is your relative velocity
to Earth?

5. An lizard crawls 61.0 m north; then, 6.0 m, 45 degrees south of east; and
finally, 3.0 m, 45 degrees south of west. What is the magnitude of the
displacement (in meter) that would have been needed to straignt to the final
destination from where the ant started?

11.
The net North component of the resultant displacement is

61 - 4.24 - 2.12 = 54.64' [N]

The net East component of the resultant displacement is

4.24 - 2.12 = 2.12' [E]

The magnitude of the resultant displacement is

d = √((54.64)2 + (2.12)2) = 54.68'
