The existence of indolence within Filipinos were described in Dr.

Jose Rizal's late article, "Sobre

la Indolencia de los Filipinos" but it was attributed with certain reasons. Before the Spaniards came,
Filipinos were not that indolent since they've been engaged in trade and agriculture within provinces
and other neighboring countries. When Spaniards came, the disorderliness arose. The labor and trade
have not encouraged, and the country's neighboring trade partners treated in great suspicion. The
natives were not allowed to go to their labors (farms) without permission of the governor or his officers,
and even the priests. Moreover, the church says that the rich man will not go to heaven as it is liable to
all kinds of trouble. Thus, it brings wrong attitude toward work. There has also been discrimination in
education against natives.

In this current era, Filipinos are some of the hard-working people on this planet. Considering
Filipinos leave their country to work overseas. The do grueling work to provide a better life for their
loved ones. Sometimes, they go decades without seeing their loved ones, they haven’t seen the growth
of their children. By that illustration, I must say Filipinos are not indolent.
