Sure, you’ve seen a lot of creatively-made cake online but have you ever thought of a koi
pond-inspired cake?

Celebrations are a great part of every Asian tradition. Even simple achievements like acing
a test, learning a new skill, or winning a friendly game call for a celebration. But who says
you cannot make any occasion extra special with food that will not only show creativity but
also one’s culture?

Grace Sun shared her amazing creation in a Facebook group called subtle asian traits and
in her Instagram post (@petrichoro) after they celebrated Father’s day last Sunday, June
21. At a first and closer look, her Koi pond looks so real that you might think this is a mini-
version of the usual ponds found commonly at Asian homes. But surprisingly, this amazing
masterpiece is a mouthwatering mousse cake, a koi pond-inspired cake!

The details of the Koi fishes are very accurate that you might think they are alive. The lilies
and cattails also look so real that make you want to stare at it all day and not eat it.

“A koi pond mousse cake for father’s day! I’ve had this project on my to-do list for the
longest time but I’ve always been too intimidated to start, but I decided to take the plunge
this week and I’m very glad I did J,” she said in her caption.

This real-looking cake is made of sweet bean paste, also known as mocha paste, chocolate
and mint leaves, almond flavor agar jelly, blueberry mousse, white chocolate mousse, and
black sesame chiffon.

“I love making small and intricate things, and I had so so much fun working on the lilies
and koi. Everything on the cake is edible! (The cattail stems are little pieces of dry bamboo,
and bamboo is *technically* edible, right? ) It was my first time working with bean
paste and agar-based jello so there was a lot of trial and error. I was up ‘til 5 AM but I’d say
it was worth it,” she added.

The Koi pond-like mousse cake is also made of four different layers: agar almond jelly,
blueberry mousse cake, white chocolate mousse cake, and black sesame chiffon cake.

If you receive this kind of cake, too, would you rather eat it or keep it until you can’t help
yourself to take just a tiny little bite?
