Planning a Book Trailer

1. Learner Analysis:

The targeted audience for the book trailer is about twenty middle school students in sixth
grade who will read the book on Wednesdays and Thursdays during Flex period which is a
targeted period each week to work on reading remediation skills.

a. Age/Gender: Ages 11-12

b. Cultural Background: All of the students speak English as their primary language. Some
are from lower income families and the rest are middle class students. Ethnic
backgrounds include Caucasian, African American and Hispanic.

c. Educational Level: Middle School

d. Special Needs/Accommodations: None

e. Specific Entry Skills: Students can read and comprehend on a sixth-grade level and read
at an 880 or above Lexile level.

f. Motivation – Keller’s ARCS Model:

● Attention – I will use music, animation, and inquiring questions to get the attention of my
students.
● Relevance - Students will identify with the main characters, Jess and Leslie, and the
importance of friendship and the effect of that friendship on their lives based on their
own experiences while being a teenager.
● Confidence – Students will be confident by reading a book that is on or near their reading
level and not struggle reading. I will go over with students any information about the
book where they will fully understand what the book is about such as friendship, grief
and the power of imagination.
● Satisfaction - After seeing the book trailer, students will want to find out more about this
book and the adventures of Jess and Leslie in their imaginary land of Terabithia.

2. Book Selection:

I am making a book trailer for the book “The Bridge to Terabithia, by Katherine Paterson. It
was a John Newberry Medal Award winning book.
