Final Lesson Plan
5th Grade Humanities Class
Title: Learning the differences in multicultural terminology
Topic to Teach: Defining various multicultural vocabulary words and learning when to use
them correctly
General Goals: To teach the students the difference between race, ethnicity, and culture.
Students should be able to give examples of each and use the definitions to give a short essay
explaining how each of the words apply to them.
Required Materials: Whiteboard and dry-erase markers for teacher instruction, paper and
pencils for student work
Anticipatory Set: Teacher will open the lesson with a short question and answer session with
the students to gauge what if any prior knowledge of the subject matter the students may already
possess. Questions about the various vocabulary words such as definition and examples of each
will be asked.
Step-by-Step Procedures: Teacher will hold brief question and answer session about the
vocabulary words. During this questioning the teacher will explain to the class the difference
between the words race, culture, and ethnicity. As each word is defined the teacher will use the
whiteboard and dry-erase markers to write each definition. Then the teacher will use the
whiteboard and make a table with three columns, one for race, culture, and ethnicity. Class will
then be into two groups or teams. The teacher will then give the first team a word that is an
example of either a race, culture, or ethnicity, and the students will try guessing under which
column the word should be placed. If the first team gets the answer wrong, the second team has
the chance to answer and earn a point. The two teams will then take turns trying to guess the
answers in order to get the most points. Afterwards, when a winner is declared, the students will
be asked to write a small essay describing their own race, culture, and ethnicity.
Closure: After the teacher determines a winner between the two teams, the students will be
asked if they fully understand the terminology and will have a chance to voice any questions they
may still have.
Assessment Based on Objectives: Students will be asked to write a short essay describing their
own race, culture, and ethnicity in order to see if they were able to grasp the subject and
distinguish the differences between the three words.
Possible Connections to Other Subjects: This lesson could also be used in a writing class.
