Math Lesson Plan

1. Justifying Math Solutions

2. First Grade

3. Instruction will be given to the whole group with each student answering a problem and

at some point, in the lesson students will work in a group with the people in their table.

4. Mathematics

5. (1)8.1 justify and explain the solutions to problems using manipulatives and physical

models [NS 8.1]

6. Students will be able to justify and explain the solutions to addition and subtraction

problems using the manipulatives (blocks) with 90% accuracy.

7. Overhead projector, worksheet with problems with exit ticket, crayons (already at tables),

set of 25 two colored blocks in individual baggies for each student and teacher, and set of

20 cuties (mandarins) for each table. One classroom helps will distribute papers and

another will distribute the baggies of blocks. At the end of lesson one classroom helper

will collect papers, the other will collect the baggies of blocks, and two will distribute the

bags of 20 cuties.

8. Procedures
 First hand out math worksheet that has different addition and subtraction

problems. Some will have the answer space blank and others will have part of the

problem blank, but the answer space filled. Examples: 7 + 9 = ______ , 10 – 7 =

_____, 5 + ______ = 15. Hand out to each student and keep a copy and put it on

the overhead projector and fill it out as a whole. Also hand out individual bag of

blocks to each student and keep a bag for yourself. These will be used to represent

the problems. Do the first two problems as an example. “What number is equal to

7 + 9?” Lay out seven blocks on the overhead and then nine blocks and count

them as a class. Use different colors for each group. Call on students to give you

answers. “I think that 7 + 9 = 16. Do you agree with me?” Call on a few students

and make sure they tell you why they agree or disagree.

 Afterwards have the students work on the next one and call on one student to

answer the question and then justify their answer using your blocks. Walk around

classroom occasionally and make sure that all students are using their blocks to

work out their answer and are filling out their worksheets. Help the student work

through the problem if they are having difficulty and once they have used the

blocks and given an answer, ask the class if they agree with the student, “Do you

agree with ______?” Call on a few students and make sure they tell you why they

agree or disagree. Go through this process until the worksheet is completed and

try to get as many students as possible to answer a question. At the end of the

worksheet, have the student work on the exit ticket problem (the last one) one

their own and use crayons to represent the numbers. 6 + 9 = ______, they should
draw 6 circles and 9 circles. Once the worksheet is completed collect them and

the students’ blocks.

 Lastly hand out the set proportion of cuties to each table. Each table will be acting

as a group. The last activity will be taking the format of a game. You will write a

problem on the board and each group will use their cuties as manipulatives to

work out the problem. Ask the students if they agree or disagree with this answer.

Once a group has their answer they must raise their hand and have one person

from their group justify their answer. Go through at least three of the problems set

out or more if time allows. They will be given 5 points for the correct answer and

justifying it, 3 points for only the correct answer or not getting the correct answer,

but using the manipulatives correctly. At the end of the game these points will be

added onto the points each group has gotten for the day and they will be allowed

to take a few cuties from their table home. Math Problems: 5 + 9 = 15? 8 + 10 =

18? 14 – 7 = 7? 18 – 6 = 4? 8 + 8 = 16?

9. Use embedded assessment. First make sure that all students are participating and using

their blocks. Make sure that all spaces in the worksheet are filled out to ensure they were

paying attention and following along. The exit ticket is the main portion to grade. Make

sure that the student drew their circles and got the correct answer. This will be used to

determine how well the students understand this concept. During the portion of the lesson

that students are called on to answer a question or justify, take note of how accurate their

answer and justification is. Make sure, through their explanations, that they understand

how they got that solution. This will not be grade for the gradebook. It is more for

progress and to see if it needs more coverage or different presentation in other lessons.
