Reading

A Read the report about an environmental disaster.

To the rescue!
When oil gets into the sea, it is a terrible disaster for marine life in the area. Fortunately, there are many kind, generous people who
help out in such a disaster. They belong to groups whose purpose is to help animals in danger. (1)

Timing is everything
The first step for rescuers is to find the animals affected by the oil as quickly as possible. The sooner they are treated, the greater their
chance of surviving. Rescuers need to get to the area quickly and start collecting sea birds, turtles and any other animals that have
been affected. (2)

Treatment
At the rescue centre, the animals are given medicine to protect their stomachs from the dangerous effects of the oil. Then they are
cleaned with lots of warm water and soap. (3)

In the sea
But what can rescuers do to help animals such as dolphins and fish which can’t be removed? Sadly, any animal that comes into
contact with oil dies very quickly without human assistance. As rescuers can’t collect all the animals affected by the oil, the only thing
they can do is to try to stop the oil from spreading. (4)

Costs
Oil in the sea greatly damages the environment and can affect marine life for years to come. But there is also the financial cost of
cleaning up to think about, too. (5)
