Causes of corrosion
One of the causes of corrosion is due to the electrolysis process which makes
metals susceptible to corrosion. Other factors that make metals susceptible to corrosion
are the size of the anodic and cathodic areas, small cathodes and large anodes make the
metal more slowly corroded, also large cathodes and small anodes make the metal
corroded quickly.
Common electrolytes
One of the four basic factors necessary for corrosion (common electrolytes) :
1. H2O - water
2. acids
3. Alkalies
Types of corrosion :
1. uniform
2. pitting
3. galvanic
4. concentration cell
5. intergranular
6. exfoliation
7. filiform
8. stress corrosion
9. stress corrosion cracking
10. corrosion fatigue
11. fretting
