Kindergarten Reading Resources

Kindergarten is one of the beginning places for children to begin learning reading
strategies. Here are some things to look for and to help your child with when
reading.
● Read the pictures! - Have your child look at the pictures before reading a
book and ask them, “What is happening on this page?” Remind them that
good readers do “picture walks” before reading a book to know what a book
is going to be about.
● After doing a picture walk, have your child look for sight words or letters they
already know.
● Make sure your child is reading a book a book that THEY choose. A love of
reading comes from children picking books that interest them and that are
not too hard for them. We learn at the beginning of the year that good
readers read the pictures. We also learn that the picture and words almost
alway match!
● Find an assortment of books that have a patterned structure such as, “I can
see the yellow sun. I can see the blue sky.” Read the first page for them so
they know that pattern and have them read the rest of the book.
● Practice sight words. Attached will be a list of Kindergarten sight words. You
can make flashcards on index cards and make a game out of it. Give your child
“points” or a small sticker for each one they get right. If they don’t know it
read it to them and have them repeat after you.
○ To practice sight words as an online game, go to wheeldecide.com and
input some of the Kindergarten sight words. Let your child spin the
wheel and tell you the word. If they don’t know it tell them and have
them repeat it after you. They can keep spinning to find new words.
