Before the Battle

Qazi Mudasir O-2S

by Stephen Crane from The Red Badge of Courage

Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions.

1. What does disputed mean here: "he perceived now that it did not greatly matter what
kind of soldiers he was going to fight, so long as they fought, which fact no one
disputed"?
Ans: The word disputed here means "argued". In the following case, it reinforces the idea that the
described fact does not hold people to different views.

2. What is Henry thinking about in this passage?

Ans: Henry is inducted into the army and this passage clarifies what he thought of accomplishing
great things in the front lines, but now, when placed in front of him, he is terrified of his duties and
fears he may not be able to face the enemy.

3. Explain what "his visions of broken-bladed glory" means.

Ans: "Broken bladed glory" refers to defeat in war, but at least tries to achieve fame. Henry was
disillusioned with the prospect of losing the war.

4. What does Henry learn about himself in this passage?

Ans: Henry learns that he knows practically nothing about himself and the fact frightens him. He
does not know whether he can continue the war or flee the front rows. He realized he needed to
learn more about himself.
