Carbomer

Carbopol a family of polymers which has a generic name Carbomer. In the mid 1950s carbomer
was first used. In a group their appearance is dry powders and they have high bulk densities.
They get thicken from a low acidic aqueous solution (PH around 3) to higher PH (around 5 or 6).
They can swell upto 1000 times of their original volume in the higher PH. Viscosity of the
solution they make range from 0-80000 centipoise. Properties of carbomer in gels are:

Carbopol 910: They work effectively in low concentrations.Their viscosity range is 3000-7000.
The formulation they will provide will be less viscous.

Carbopol 934: They work effectively in thik formulations. For example emulsions, suspensions,
sustained-release formulations, topicals and transdermals. They have a viscosity range from
30500-39400. When they are with water they forms clear gels.

Carboppl 940: They also work effectively in thik formulations. They make a very clear
formulation in hydroalcoholic topical gels or water. They form clear gels with Hydroalcoholic
systems. They have a viscosity range from 40000-60000.

These are some important properties of carbomer in pharmaceutical gel preparations.
