Ice Cream
Ice cream is the favourite frozen dessert in most countries. It is made of cream, sugar, and different
flavours. Some kinds of ice cream also contain eggs. Ice milk has less fat than ice cream but is also delicious. The
wife of the third U.S. president (James Madison) was the first person to serve ice cream in the White House about
two hundred years ago. Today, Americans eat in excess of thirty million litres per year.

Tic-Tac-Toe
To play tic-tac-toe is not difficult. First, you must draw a grid. You can do this by drawing two vertical

X in any square, and then the other player puts an O in one of the open spaces. The goal of the game is to be the
first player to have three marks (X or O) in the same line.

The Telegraph
The telegraph was invented in 1837 by Samuel Morse and revolutionized communication. It is an
instrument for sending messages between distant places by an electric current. To operate a telegraph, you push a
special key and then release it. This action closes and opens the electric circuit. The telegraph makes use of a
special code, called the Morse code. A message sent on a telegraph is called a telegram. In the 1800s, the telegraph
was extremely important until it was replaced by the radio and the telephone.

Mark Twain
Mark Twain was one of the most popular authors in America. His real name was Samuel Langhorne
Clemens, and he was born in 1835 in the state of Missouri. He grew up and spent most of his life near the great
Mississippi River. In 1864 he travelled to California. He became famous the following year when he wrote a short
story which was called “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”. In the next few years, he travelled
around the world and continued his writing career.

Letter to the Newport Evening News
On Saturday afternoon I left my handbag on the bus. In it were my cheque book, address book and my
purse, which contained about £50 in cash and some credit cards. When I realized what I had done, it was too late. I
didn’t know what to do: I’m 72 years old, I was a long way from home, and I was quite worried. In fact, I stood by
the side of the road and just cried. A young man asked me what was wrong and I explained what had happened to
me. He gave me some money for my bus fare home. When I told the bus driver what had happened he said I should
keep the fare.
I got home safely and the telephone rang soon after. It was the manager of CityBus, the company that
owned the bus on which I had left my handbag. He said that they had my handbag and he offered to drive over to
return it. I got my handbag back, amazingly with all its contents untouched. I would just like to say how wonderful
everybody was who helped me on that day, and how much I appreciate their kindness and honesty.

Ainsley Harriott
I’ve always been a bit of an entertainer and played the funny man. I was a part-time comedian for years, so
I learned how to stand in front of audiences. It made me sure of myself. I like being liked and I love making
everyone smile.
I’ve lived in London all my life and have just moved to a larger house with my wife Clare and our two
children, Jimmy and Madeleine. We spend a lot of time just singing and dancing around the house. I grew up with
