Let Hope Light Your Way

Norman Vincent Peale

1. ___________________

What’s the condition of hope in your life at this very moment? Does it get up
with you every morning when you rise from your bed? Does it carry you
confidently through the day? Is it still there, soothing and sustaining you, as
you fall asleep? That’s what God intended when He created this shining quality
and powered in into us at birth. If somehow cares and worries and fears and
discouragement have gained ascendancy in your mind, then you need to open
the windows of your soul and let a strong, fresh current of hope come surging
through, neutralizing those mysteries, chasing out those hobgoblins, giving you
the energy and confidence and enthusiasm for living that you need.
Ah, you may say dolefully, it’s all very well to talk like that, but I have very
real health problems and money problems and problems with my family. Just
wishing won’t make it go away, will it?

2. ___________________

I’m not talking about wishing. Wishing is usually a form of daydreaming. It’s
wistful. It’s weak. It’s even faintly negative, because when you say “I wish” it
usually means you don’t believe the wish will come true. But when you hope
– really hope ah, and then a magic ingredient comes into play. That ingredient
is expectancy. Expectancy says, “This desired outcome can happen. It may
happen. I think it’s going to happen. Right now, it may be just a dream, but
it’s a realizable dream.” When you start hoping instead of just wishing, this
expectation is stirring in you, and with expectation comes power – the power
that changes hopes into realities.

3. ___________________

Hope is more than just a word; it’s a dynamic force, a concept full of power. It
can bring the weak back to strength. It can bring the sick back to health. It can
turn failure to success. No wonder St. Paul placed it with the three great
principles of Christianity in faith, hope, and love.

I want you to meet my friend

SpongebobSquarepants. A while ago, I
requested him to prepare two
hamburgers. One for you and one for
me. After a minute, the hamburger was
made. Now, look at the two hamburgers.
Which of these will you choose to eat?
Why? The second hamburger

Exactly! The second hamburger is

more delicious to eat since it is well-
prepared. Look at the layers, nothing is
missing. They are all complete.

A well-prepared hamburger is also

similar to the parts of a well-structured
essay. How? That is what you are going
to find out. Not just that, since in this
lesson, you will also learn how to identify
the parts of a well-structured essay.

2. Firm- Up

A hamburger has three parts.

The first layer is the top bun.
top bun

This part catches the person’s interest. At the

same time, it introduces the kind of the
burger a person is eating.

Similarly, the first part of a well-structured essay

has the same purpose. It aims to capture the
reader’s interest. At the same time, it
introduces what’s the topic all about.

If its function is to introduce, therefore, the first

part of a well-structured essay is called what?

hamburger is the most delicious part
because it is loaded with fresh and
nutritious patty and vegetables. This part
is responsible for sustaining the
deliciousness of the hamburger.

Just like the middle layer of the

hamburger, the second part of a well-
structured essay is loaded with well-
organized ideas which strongly support
the introduction.

This part also sustains the reader’s

interest, enjoyment, and appreciation of a
reading material. The second part of a
well-structured essay which follows right
after the introduction is called the body.

Body

Body

This part of the essay contains explanatory

sentences that give support to the thesis
statement. These explanatory sentences
are known as supporting details.

Example:

The qualities of a good paragraph are unity,

coherence, and emphasis. Unity is the
oneness of ideas in purpose and in
content. Coherence is another quality of
an effective paragraph. Here, the
sentences are arranged orderly. Aside
from unity and coherence, emphasis is
also needed. This pertains that the more
important details will be given more
prominence.

The last layer of the hamburger is the

bottom bun.

3. Deepen

I have here an example of an essay about

friendship. Note that the three paragraphs of
the essay arenot in proper sequence.

Paragraph #1

Friendship is a simple word yet hard to define,

simple to attain yet hard to maintain. It is a
word that has many definitions but when
one finds a friendship to others, it will make
his life worth living

Paragraph #2

Friendship comes with responsibilities too.

When he is pouring out his heart to you then
you must listen. What he tells you in
confidence must remain with you. You are
responsible to give him advice rebuke and
correction. And above all, when he does not
heed it and falls, you have the responsibility
to stand with him, in his failure, disgrace,
and shame.

Paragraph #3

A famous boxer, Muhammad Ali, once said,

“Friendship is not something you learn in
school. But if you haven't learned the
meaning of friendship, you really haven't
learned anything”.

Which paragraph is the introduction of the

essay? Why?

Very good!

How about the body? Which paragraph

pertains to the body of the essay? How do
you say so?
