BURDEN OF MENTAL DISORDERS IN PRIMARY CARE

Mental disorders are common, and are associated with poor outcomes for
concomitant medical illnesses. Primary care physicians (PCPs) manage patients
with both mental and medical illnesses.1 It is estimated that approximately 43–60% of
treatment for mental illness occurs in primary care, whereas 17–20% occurs in
speciality mental health care.1
