PNEUMATIC MAIL

At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, pipes became of
great importance in the administrations or in the businesses that needed to transport
small packages that were already of great importance in their time, for example, they
used to transport money or mail to through distances The doors of the same building or
sometimes to a city. The first pneumatic tubes were built in 1893 in Philadelphia,
Boston, Brooklyn, New York, Chicago and St. Louis. In 1915, these six cities had more
than 56 miles of pneumatic tubes throbbing under the street mentioned Nancy A. Pope.

The pneumatic tubes are the cylindrical systems are propelled by the tube network
system by means of compressed air or by means of vacuum. During the First World
War, the Post Office suspended the service to conserve funds for the war effort. After
the war service was restored in New York and Boston. In the 1950, the completion of
the pneumatic tubes was close, the increase in mail volume and the change of urban
landscapes that made it impractical. While post offices and businesses move relatively
easily, the underground pneumatic system can’t do it. The networks of the tubes
accelerated the mail along the streets of the city from the 1890s. The mail was based on
the cans of the tubes that came to contain up to 600 letters. The boats traveled at an
average of 35 miles per hour. Pipe mail was used most in New York City until the 1950.
Service between Brooklyn and New York City was discontinued in April 1950.

The pneumatic tubes were as important as e-mail, the packages in the nineteenth
century, but also the development of technology. Old mail and most people, businesses
or administrations opted for modern technology. This caused the unemployment of
several families, forcing them to find new ways of working.
