standard five, Jahira Reyes, Sam Seals and Anya Lewis participated in the “ten to twelve age category” of
the World Wetland Day Poster Competition themed “Save the Wetlands”. This competition was hosted
by the Ministry of Agriculture to raise awareness and appreciation for the environment.
Information about the competition was previously given to all the students of standard five and
they were encouraged by the class teacher, Ms. Mohan to participate in the event. After the morning
assembly, the principal, Mr. Jones visited the standard five classroom to brief the three students who
volunteered: Jahira, Sam and Anya. He explained the procedure of the competition. Students were
required to design a poster on the theme ‘Save the Wetlands”. All the supplies would be provided to the
students. These included: poster paper of size forty by thirty centimetres, a plastic bottle, a bottle of
white glue, a pair of scissor and markers.
Following this, he informed the students or the competition rules. First, all ideas should be
original, and students were not to be assisted in any way. Second, students were to only submit one
poster per entry and third, poster size should be forty by thirty centimetres. Students would be judged
on originality, creativity and neatness. Afterwards, the selected students were taken to the library where
they were to design the posters.
At the library, the supplies were distributed and the students were informed that they could take
as much time as needed to complete the design. However, they had to turn in their designs by the end
of the school day at half past two in the afternoon. After this, the students were allowed to begin. About
an hour and a half later, all the students turned in their posters to be submitted to the Ministry of
Agriculture. Jahira’s poster portrayed the wetlands of Trinidad and Tobago and was titled, “Keep T and T
Beautiful”. Sam’s poster displayed the pollution and the destruction of the wetlands and was named
“Sweet Sweet T and T” and lastly Anya’s portrayal, “Home Sweet Home” was of the many creatures and
plants that reside in a wetland habitat.
Within three weeks, the results were announced to the student body during the lunch period
assembly. Jahira Reyes attained the second place among the twenty schools which competed. She won
a thousand-dollar shopping spree at Bookworms Bookstore. Sam Seals and Anya Lewis did not place but
they each received a one-hundred-dollar book voucher for their participation. After the announcement,
