There is no top end on shotguns. You can order a custom shotgun
from a European gun-maker starting at six figures, and it will be ready
in a mere two to five years—unless Germany invades. These are called
“bespoke shotguns,” which means they are ordered or arranged in
advance. Want one that merely costs as much as your car instead of as
much as your house? Check out Beretta’s SL3 line of premium shot-
guns. OK, you can’t get the likeness of your bald uncle Louie smoking a
blunt engraved on the side, but some hand engraving and fitting come
standard. And once you shoot one, you can’t go back to an off-the-rack
scattergun. By the way, Beretta makes bespoke guns, too. If you need
someone to run over to Italy and help you order it, I’m available.

nature of the bag, the company elected to use
an exterior bungee cord and multiple zippered

SPRINGFIELD CHANGES
THE GAME WITH THE SMALLEST,

POLYMER 9MM IN HISTORY
( BY MIKE DETTY • ALEX LANDEEN PHOTOS )

It was a page out of a Cold War espionage novel. I was
sworn to secrecy and forced to sign a non-disclosure
agreement for something I knew nothing about. In due
time, an unmarked delivery van arrived at my house and
a courier brought a package to the door. All I knew was
that I had been tasked to evaluate a new Springfield Armory product, but
I had no idea what type of gun it would be. I anxiously cut through the
cardboard box and removed a small hard plastic case. Popping the locks
and opening the container, I found a note written by Springfield CEO
Dennis Reese: “This is the first step in a new direction for Springfield
Armory polymer handguns, and we are excited to share it with the world.”
With that, I am proud to give Ballistic readers an exclusive first
glimpse of Springfield Armory’s new Hellcat! Billed as the world’s
highest-capacity micro-compact 9mm, the Hellcat is just 6 inches long,
4 inches tall and 1 inch wide. Boasting an 11+1 capacity with its flush-fit
patented magazine and 13+1 with an extended version, the Hellcat is big
on firepower in a tiny package. In fact, this little mighty-might weighs just
1.9 ounces over the pound mark with an unloaded magazine.

As a teenager in 1983, I was a U.S. Marine-
option naval midshipmen at UC Berkeley with
aspirations of flying the then-new F-18 for the
Marine Corps. But, haunted by having lived in
Vietnam as a child—my first memories of life
start with the Tet Offensive of 1968 in Saigon—I went to my
commanding officer and requested a leave of absence (LOA).
With my LOA and a plane ticket to Thailand, I headed off to try
my luck at combat photography, reporting on American MIAs
left in Indochina at the end of the Vietnam War, the Viet-Khmer
War and the Hmong Resistance. In the end, I spent 11 months
imprisoned by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The story
was later turned into an international bestselling memoir that
stirred Discovery Channel to hire me to appear on its show
Treasure Quest: Snake Island.
Ironically, after my release from Vietnam nearly a year later,
I spent much of my time in the air, either flying on airlines to
locations around the world on assignment for various news
services, or later—when I was recruited by the CIA to help
fight President Reagan’s war against communism—in a
variety of aircraft, including UH-1s, MD-500s, A-37s, O-2s,

Alaska offers the outdoors-
man an incredible opportunity
to explore a wilderness no
longer found in the Lower 48.
It’s a land of duality. In the
Alaskan bush, there is feast and famine. Sun-
light can be almost an all-day phenomenon,
or there might be none at all. There are also
hunters and hunted, or predators and prey.
Recently, I traveled to Alaska with a few
others for a week of salmon and trout fishing.
But I also went prepared for any worst-case
scenario and carried a big-bore rifle as well
as a small-bore pistol. This combination, in
my eyes, could sustain an outdoorsman in
the wild with both food for the pot and plenty
of protection against dangerous game.

HOW AUTHENTIC IS THE
WEAPONRY SHOWN IN THE
HIT NETFLIX SERIES?
BY JEREME ZIMMERMAN • PHOTOS COURTESY NETFLIX

If you’re as obsessed with medieval and Viking-era
history and weaponry as I am, then you’ve likely
watched Netflix’s The Last Kingdom or have it on
your to-do list. For those who haven’t, here’s a quick
summary before you get to binge watching.
The show is based on the Saxon Stories, a series of historical
novels by British author Bernard Cornwell. The first book of the series
(of which there are currently 11) is The Last Kingdom, although the
Netflix show covers several of the novels. Set in 9th and 10th century
Britain, the novels and the Netflix series follow the life and exploits
of Uhtred of Bebbanburg. As a young boy, Uhtred (named Osbert at
the time) witnesses a host of Danes attack his home in Northumbria
and kill his brother and father, a Saxon lord. Before he dies, his father
tells Osbert that his new name is “Uhtred, son of Uhtred” since he is
now the eldest son and the new heir of Bebbanburg.

¨
INSIDE THE LAST KINGDOM
The Danish warlord who led the invasion,
Earl Ragnar, decides to take Uhtred as a slave
because he “fights like a Dane” and eventually
adopts him, renaming him Uhtred Ragnarson
and converting him to paganism. Uhtred is
still the rightful heir to Bebbanburg, but his
uncle, Aelfric, takes the title of Ealdorman of
Bebbanburg for himself.
Twenty or so years later, Ragnar is killed
in an attack on his home by a former vassal
whom he had banished. Uhtred is once again
“free” but now must toe the line between
loyalties to his surrogate family (whose deaths
he has vowed to avenge) and pursuing his
rightful position as Ealdorman of Bebbanburg.
The rest of the series follows Uhtred as he
becomes caught up in the ongoing wars
between the Saxons and the Danes, who have
managed to capture all seven Anglo-Saxon
kingdoms but Wessex, the “last kingdom.”
THE WEAPONRY
Two types of shields are portrayed primarily
in The Last Kingdom: round shields used by
the Danes and rectangular shields used by
the Saxons. Round shields would have been
the most common for foot combat for both
sides. My guess is that the shield shapes

Shield walls are portrayed on several
occasions, which I’m a bit torn on. There is
some historical evidence that shield walls were
used, but probably not the way they’re used
in the show. Granted, they look damned cool,

AFTER HOURS
→
It’s the 21st century, and many
aspects of society seem to be
racing towards change and
modernization. Few items go
untouched, including the world of spirits. A stroll
through the aisle at your local liquor store can be
a bit overwhelming at times. The shelves are full
of new and exotic concoctions like apple-infused
bourbon or asparagus-based liqueurs. OK, I
made that last one up, but right now someone is
probably thinking of a way to make it.
In all this rush to make something new,
it’s time to remind everyone that some of the
standard bearers are still relevant, tasty and
iconic. One that comes to mind many times in
these discussions is gin. The hipster crowd may
dismiss this epic beverage as an antiquated drink
from the ’20s, but I am here to break that stereo-
type and share with you why gin is still one of the
ALL
best spirits we have the pleasure of enjoying.

Brockmans is an English gin made with a
100-year-old traditional copper still. It features
a perfect blend of botanicals, including juniper,
blackberries, blueberries, coriander, angelica
root, orris root, cassia bark, licorice, orange peel,
lemon peel and almond. Brockmans is a true

one of the best. (brockmansgin.com)
3. Caorunn
Caorunn is a premium Scottish gin handcrafted
using only the finest pure-grain spirits as well
as traditional and foraged gin botanicals. It has
a very clean, crisp and slightly sweet flavor with
balanced floral and citrus tones. Caorunn is also
unique in that it’s quadruple distilled in small
batches using natural Scottish water and 11

7. Sipsmith
This English gin is a mix of old and new.
Sipsmith is still made using a traditional copper
pot but contains a diverse and interesting mix
of botanicals that help it stand out, including
lemon peel, Seville orange peel, juniper berries,
Madagascan cinnamon bark, Belgian angelica
root, Bulgarian coriander seed, Chinese cassia
bark, Italian orris root, Spanish ground almond
and Spanish licorice root. Even with these items,
the gin retains a great crisp flavor that isn’t
remotely overwhelming. (sipsmith.com)

This small-batch Islay dry gin is made with a
variety of botanicals that give it a unique and
enjoyable flavor. The gin’s 22 wild botanicals are
handpicked around Atlantic shores and com-
