Zion=s Youth and the Hymns of Truth

Music has boundless powers for moving families toward greater spirituality and devotion to the gospel.
Latter-day Saints should fill their homes with the sound of worthy music.
Teach your children to love the hym ns. Sing them on the Sabbath, in hom e evening, during scripture
study, at prayer time. Sing as you work, as you play, and as you travel together.
Hymns can lift our spirits, give us courage, and move us to righteous action.
Hymns can also help us withstand the temptations of the adversary. We encourage you to memorize
your favorite hymns and study the scriptures that relate to them. Then, if unworthy thoughts enter your mind,
sing a hymn to yourself, crowding out the evil with the good.
The First Presidency
(Hymns, 1985, x)

After reading from The First Presidency Preface in the hymn book, how can we not fill our homes with
the sounds of our hymns. Hymns can be a great blessing in the lives of our youth, especially when the youth of
our church are bombarded from every direction with outside influences that would attempt to drive the Holy
Ghost away.
Church programs that can help bring the hymns into your home are:

Quotes

Parents ought to foster good music in the home and cultivate a desire to have their children learn the hymns of
inspiration.
Boyd K. Packer, Ensign, Jan. 1974

Singing our beautiful, worshipful hymns is food for our souls. We become of one heart and one mind when we
sing praises to the Lord.

Church hymns are a form of worship. They serve as a prayer of thanks and an expression of commitm ent.
Merrill J. Bateman, Ensign, July 2001

If we listen, (the hym ns) are teaching the gospel. . .the hym ns of Restoration are, in fact, a course in doctrine.
Boyd K. Packer, Ensign, Nov. 1991

The singing of hymns is one of the best ways to put ourselves in tune with the Spirit of the Lord. I wonder if we
are making enough use of this heaven-sent resource in our meetings, in our classes, and in our homes.
. . .Our hym ns contain matchless doctrinal sermons, surpassed only by the scriptures in their truth and poetic
impact.
