1. A diesel engine has the following dimensions: Displacement of 2.4 liters; 4


cylinders; 4 stroke; bore is 90% of the stroke. The engine’s compression ratio is
18, the cut-off ratio is 2.3 and the specific heat ratio is 1.36. At the beginning of
compression, the conditions are 33 0C and 98 kPa. If the engine operates at 2,500
rpm, Determine:
a) Pressure and Temperature after Heat addition,
b) Diameter of the bore and length of stroke in cm,
c) The expansion ratio,
d) The ideal power in Hp.

2. Give 5 reasons why a Diesel engine is used in applications requiring torque while
a Gasoline engine is used in application requiring speed. Present your answers in
a bulleted format.

2. 5 reasons why diesel engine is used for in application requiring torque:
• Diesel engine are built with longer strokes than gasoline engine causing higher
more pressure built in strokes and cylinders although this method lowers the rpm
rate but produce higher torque.
• Components or parts of diesel engine is heavier and bulkier that can withstand
high pressure because of producing high torque.
• Diesel engine has a higher compression ratio than a gasoline engine, as it is
relying in the heat of the air to combust the fuel that translate into more torque.
• Diesel is more combustible than a gasoline engine because of this diesel engine
there’s more time that the fuel is spending pushing down the piston versus that a
gasoline engine.
• Diesel engine has a lean air fuel ratio and by burning lean, it can have more air
expand and create more useful work that leads to turbocharged with result more
higher torque output than gasoline engine.

5 reasons why gasoline engine is used for in application requiring speed:


• Gasoline engine are built with shorter stokes that can translate to less travel time
of piston from TDC to BDC and vice versa, this create greater speed rather than
diesel engine.
• Gasoline engine has a lighter component than diesel engine causing the
movement of the piston is faster than diesel engine.
• Gasoline engine produce higher rpm rather than diesel engine because gasoline
burns faster than diesel.
• Gasoline engine is lighter than diesel engine causing to lessen the weight and
makes the rotation of the crankshaft reduce.
• Gasoline engine has a lower compression ratio that leads to faster reciprocation
of piston.
PART II.

An ideal air-standard Diesel cycle engine has a compression ratio of 16 and a cutoff ratio of 2.2.
At the beginning of the compression process, the working fluid is at 98 kPa, 27°C (300 K).
Determine the temperature and pressure of the air at the end of each process, the net work
output per cycle [kJ/kg], and the thermal efficiency. Note that the nominal specific heat capacity
values used for air at 300K are CP = 1.00 kJ/kg.K, Cv = 0.717 kJ/kg.K,, and k = 1.4.
A one-cylinder Diesel engine operates on the air-standard cycle and receives 29 Btu/rev.
The inlet pressure is 13.7 psia, the inlet temperature is 85°F, and the volume at the bottom
dead center is 1.5 ft3. At the end of compression, the pressure is 500 psia. Determine:
(a) the cycle efficiency
(b) the power if the engine runs at 300RPM
An air std. Otto cycle uses 0.15 kg of air and has a 14% clearance. The initial conditions
are 100 kPa and 33˚ C, and the energy release during combustion is 1620
KJ/kg.Determine the:
(a) Work net, WK net,
(b) cycle efficiency
