Fire testing according to ISO 5660-1 (Reaction to fire tests-Heat release, smoke production znd

mass loss rate. P1 : Heat release rate (cone calorimeter method) and smoke production rate
(dynamic measurement))

Test method is used for fire technical modelling.

Method : Sample with the dimensiion 100mmx100mm is subjected to a specific irradiance level (for
example either 25kW/m² or 50 kW/m² for products in trains). The surface of the sample is heated
and starts to emit pyrolysis gases that ignite by a spark igniter. The emitted gases are collected in a
hood and transported away though a ventilation system. The heat release is measured using the data
on measured oxygen concentration in the emitted smoke. The smoke production is measured
continually thoughout the test with a laser system.

The following parameters are measured in the method : Ignition properties, Heat release rate
(kW/m²), total heat release (MJ/m²), mass loss (g/s), effective net heat of combustion (MJ/kg) and
smoke production rate (m²/s). Levels of toxic gases can also be measured with FTIR analysis.

Preparation : complete test -> 6 specimens with dimensions 100mmx100mmxnominal thickness (max
50mm)

Indicative test -> 2 specimens with dimensions 100mmx100mmxnominal thickness

(max 50mm)

Fire testing according to EN ISO 11925-2 : Reaction to fire tests-Ignitability of products subjected to
direct impingement of flame – Part 2 : single-flame source test

Goal : measurement of the ignitability of building products when exposed to a small flame.
Classification according to Euroclass B, Bfl, C, Cfl, CL, D, Dfl, DL, E, Ef according to the European
System.

Method : The test takes place inside a test chamber where the test specimen is mounted vertically.
The test specimen is subjected to edge and/or surface exposure from a small gas flame. During the
test, time of ignition, burning droplets and whether the flames reach the top marking of the test
specimen within a prescribed time period, is registered.
Preparations : complete test -> 12 part tests : 18 test specimens, 9 specimens in one direction (e.g.
production direction) and 9 specimens in perpendicular direction to the first direction, with the
dimensions 90mmx250mm.

indicative test -> 4 part tests : 8 specimens, 4 specimens in one direction (e.g.
production direction) and 4 specimens in perpendicular direction to the first direction, with the
dimensions 90mmx250mm.

Fire testing according to ISO 5658-2 (example for products in trains) Reaction to fire tests – Spread
of flame – Part 2 : Lateral flame spread on building Products in vertical configuration

Goal : evaluate a mateerial’s ability to withstand a fire spreading along its surface.

Method : The specimen is inserted in the specimen holder together with a substrate. It is vertically
positioned during the test and is exposed to heat radiation from a radiation panel. The test is
conducted with a pilot flame. The time is noted when the specimen is ignited as well as when the
flame reaches each of the 50mm stations along the specimen centre line. Other parameters that are
notes are the time to flame out of the flame front on the center line, the burnt length and any
occurrence of burning droplets.

Preparations : complete test -> 6 specimens with dimensions 795mm x 155mm x nominal thickness
(max 50mm)

Indicative test -> 2 specimens with dimensions 795mm x 155mm x nominal thickness (max 50mm)
