FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates 10 @ method for removing
sulphur dioxide from gaseous eluent, wherein a mixture of
gaseous outlet gasses or gaseous efluent includes sulphur
‘oxide and carbon monoxide, and wherein, 10 perform a
catalytic reduction, a catalyst is used to catalyse a reaction
herween carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide to produce
‘carbon dioxide and sulphur,
“The inveation also relates new uses of catalysts, in
particular to new uses of titanium dioxide as a catalyst.
‘Typically, ssid catalysts do not promote hydrogenation reac
tions or the eacton of carbon monoxide and water (the shift
reaction). Typically, such catalysts do promote the reaction
‘of hhydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide (the “Claus”
reaction) andor the hydrolysis of carbou-sulphur com
Pounds. The invention also provides methods and reactors
‘comprising said catalysts
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
Sulphur dioxide is a typical by-product of industrial
processes such asthe smelting of sulphide ores or burning of
sulphur contsiaing fuels. If vented tothe atmosphere with-
‘out treatment, it can cause environmental problems such as
eid rain,
‘The tatment of sulphur dioxide by thermal reduction to
sulphur using methane, or a gas containing predominantly
methane, such as natural gas, is known, However, in prac~
tice such dhermal eduction processes sufler from either soot
formation or the need to ad steam to the reaction mixture
to avoid soot formation. In both seenarios, particularly the
second, fuel consumption is high
UK 12137600 discloses a process for producing sulpior
fiom sulphur dioxide using thermal redvetion with natural
as which has been successflly demonstrated on an indus-
teal scale unit
This process operates with high sulphur recovery eli
