Cleaning and disinfecting beauty salon equipment

A study of health and safety issues in beauty salons (HSL, 2007) showed
concerns by LA enforcement officers about decontamination of tools and
equipment.

Decontamination of equipment in beauty salons

Re-usable equipment requires decontamination between clients, particularly tools

that come into contact with the body.

Why is decontamination necessary?

In beauty salons, re-usable equipment requires appropriate and effective

cleaning and disinfection. Decontamination minimises the risk of transmission of
infectious disease (cross infection) arising from:

 Blood contamination: risks from blood-borne viruses (BBV),

principally hepatitis B (HBV) , hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which causes AIDS
 Skin or nail infection: risks from common skin bacteria such as Staphylococcus
species and from Onychomycosis (a general term referring to several common
fungal infections of the toenails or fingernails)
 Salon staff should be given training in cleaning and decontamination
methodology.
