Psychiatric rehabilitation in community-based day centres: Motivation and
satisfaction
Author :Eklund, Mona; Tjörnstrand, Carina

Having a meaningful everyday activity and feeling productive have repeatedly been shown to be essential
for recovery and perceiving meaning in life for people with psychiatric disabilities. Meaningful activities
are central in governmental goals and in rehabilitation programs for people with psychiatric disabilities,
such as community-based day centers . The research regarding rehabilitation in day centers is scanty,
though, and a review revealed knowledge gaps regarding both descriptive studies and evaluations of
outcomes of the rehabilitation provided in day centers. (Eklund & Tjörnstrand, 2013)
Four items assessing motivation among day center attendees were developed through this procedure.
These items were: “How motivated are you to attend this day center?”; “How much do you agree with the
statement ‘I set up clear goals for what to do in this day center’?”; “How much would you prefer to spend
your time on your own?”; and “How much would you prefer to have paid work to go to?”. The two first
items had been used in a previous study of client satisfaction and the other two were formulated to
correspond to the main findings from day center research, namely their social nature and the ambition to
compensate for not having employment . The items were seen as different facets of motivation for how to
spend one’s days and not as forming a scale. Future research should investigate if changes in such
directions in the day center services would further stimulate the attendees’ motivation. (Eklund &
Tjörnstrand, 2013)

Psychiatric rehabilitation
Author: H. Chandrashekar, N. R. Prashanth, P. Kasthuri, and S. Madhusudhan
Psychiatric rehabilitation and psychiatric treatment are separate, yet equally important complementary
components of mental healthcare. Even as psychiatric treatment (Pharmacological and psychological)
aims at controlling psychiatric symptoms, psychiatric rehabilitation focuses on functioning and role
outcomes. The new focus of rehabilitation is on wellness and optimum quality of life. (H. Chandrashekar,
2010)
Ponnuchamy et al.examined the role of family support groups in psychosocial rehabilitation. They
observed that members attending support group meetings, expected to get more information about the
illness, to develop skills to cope with problems at home, and to learn skills to deal with the ill person.
They concluded that participation in a support group meeting positively affected key variables in the
participant’s adaptation to mental illness in a relative. (H. Chandrashekar, 2010)
Thara in a commentary has stressed the need for cost-effectiveness studies for rehabilitation. She reports
the experience of Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF) in rural areas, where it was found that the
most suitable elements of a rehabilitation program were empowering the families and offering simple,
culture-specific interventions, such as distribution of livestock and fishing nets. (H. Chandrashekar, 2010)

There is a gross scarcity of publications in the IJP with respect to the rehabilitation in psychiatry. The
mental health professionals need to take lead in publishing rehabilitation efforts or models being practiced
by them in different parts of India. The effect of the disability benefits provided by the government needs
to be assessed. The indigenous, innovative models followed need to be published. (H. Chandrashekar,
2010)
