They eventually moved to Bellville, OH, where William operated a tailor shop. Notes from Elston family records: "On February 26, 1878 ... Wiliam Elston died. His heart just stopped pumping. William was born in Noblesville, England. He moved to Birmingham England, and ‘opened a shoemaker ship. His first wife, Ann Osborn, died in England, leaving a daughter and a son. In 1836, William moved fo America. ... William Elston set up a shoe store in Lowell, Massachusetts. Just down the street was the Howard and Kimball Dressmakers shop, run by Lucinda Howard and Abigail Kimball. Wiliam Elston and Abigail Kimball lived in the same boarding house on the comer of Howard and K Street. They were married November 21, 1843 by Rev. Burna in the Lowell Presbyterian Church. William moved his family first to Andover Massachusetts where Barilla was born September 11, 1845. In 1853 the family moved to Belleville, Ohio.” The Austin siblings mentioned in the novel are Amos, Emily, and George Dana. They were the children of Abiather and Susan (Harlow) Austin. From Tidd family records: “Pliny Tidd was @ blacksmith by trade, @ prominent member of the Odd Fellows, and a man respected and liked by all his associates.
