Example for Permutation

if we have two elements A and B, then there are

two possible arrangements, AB and BA .

Example for Combinations

For example, if we have twoelements A and B

then there is only one way select two items
we select both of them .

Permutation Formula

1- Permutation With Repetition:

Use permutation formulas when order matters in
the problem .
Where n is the number of things to choose from,
and you choose r of them .

Example :
nr
A lock has a 5 digit code. Each digit is chosen from 0-9, and a
GLJLWFDQEHUHSHDWHGZHJHWPDQ\GLႇHUHQWFRGHV

n = 10 , r = 5
105 = 100,000codes

2- Permutation Without Repetition:

Use permutation formulas when order matters in
the problem .
Where n is the number of things to choose from,
and you choose r f them. Sometimes you can
see the following notation for the same concept :

Example :
:HKDYHRUGHURXWRIGLႇHUHQWSRROEDOOV

n = 16 , r = 3
16 !
= 3,360 ways
( 16 - 3 )!
Combination Formula

1- Combination with repetition :

Use combination formulas when order doesn’t
matter in the problem.
Where n is the number of things to choose from,
and you choose r of them .

( n + r - 1 )!
r! ( n - 1 )!
Example :
,IWKHUHDUHÀDYRUVRILFHFUHDPDQG\RXFDQKDYHVFRRSV
RILFHFUHDPVRZHKDYHPDQ\FRPELQDWLRQV

( 5 + 3 - 1 )!
n = 5 , r = 3 ==> = 35 comcinations
3! ( 5 - 1 )!
2- Combination without repetition :
Use combination formulas when order doesn’t
matter in the problem.
Where n is the number of things to choose from,
and you choose r f them. Sometimes you can
see the following notation for the same concept :
pr n!
c = ( nr ) = n
= r!(n-r)!
n r r!
Example :
7KHႋDWHORWWHU\FKRRVHVGLႇHUHQWQXPEHUVEHWZHHQDQG
WRGHWHUPLQHWKHZLQQLQJQXPEHUVZHKDYHPDQ\FRPELQDWLRQV

50!
n = 50 , r = 6 ==> = 15,890,700 compinations
6! ( 50 - 6 )!
So while it is manageable to memorize those equations,
