Over and Flat:

X1 plays deny and goes "Over" the screen. If X1

gets behind the ball, he tries to stay on O1's
shoulder until he can get back in front of O1.
X5 comes up even with O5 (the screener) and plays
"Flat" -- wide arms, to discourage penetration.
When X1 gets back to O1, X5 dives back to O5.
(not shown -- help defense on the roller (O5)).

Use this as your base pick and roll coverage.

"Push"
When O5 goes to set a screen, X5 "pushes" him to
slow / stop his roll to the basket.
X1 goes under the screen set by O5.

Use when a) O5 is more dangerous than O1, or b)

O1 is not a good shooter.

"Drop" or "Down"
X5 plays to protect the rim. If O1 is a good shooter,
then X1 goes over the screen; if O1 is a good
driver, then X1 goes under the screen.

Use when a) X5 is not a good mid-range shooter

and/or b) you want to contain O1 and are not
worried about what O5 might do.
"ICE"
X1 jumps high to prevent O1 from using the ball
screen.
X5 sinks to protect the lane and discourage the
drive.

Use on side ball screens.
