Slump test
‘The slump testis a means of assessing the consistency of fresh concrete. Its used, indirectly, as a means of checking thatthe correct
amount af water has been added to the mix. The test is carried out in accordance with BS EN 12350-2, Testing fresh concrete, lump test
‘The steel slump cone is placed on a sold, impermeable, level base and fled withthe fresh concrete in three equal layers. Each lay
roddec 25 times to ensure compaction. The third layer is fnished off level with the top ofthe cone. The cone is carefully lifted up,
‘aheap of concrete that settles or ‘slumps’ slighty. The upturned slump cone is placed on the base to act as a reference, and the
ifference in level between its top and the top of the conerete is measured and recorded tothe nearest 10mm to give the slump of the
conerete
saving
When the cone is removed, the slump may take one of three farms, Ina true slump the conerete simply subsides, keeping more a less to
shape. In 2 shear slump the top portion ofthe concrete shears off and slips sideways, Ina collapse slump the concrete collapses
completely. Only a true slump is of any use inthe test. Ifa shear or collapse slump is achieved, afresh sample should be taken and the
test repeated, & collapse slump will generally mean thatthe rixis too wet or that itis a high workability mix, for which the flow test (see
separate entry) is more appropriate.
