Flash back:
o A f.b is defined as a scene or section of the plot which shows the past event of a character.
o F.b can be used in both short stories as well as novels.
o It is used to give some kind of explanation or some kind of psychological insight of a
character.
o F.b is a device which allows the plot of a story or a novel to shift forward or backward again
and again.
o In other words the incidents which are happening now and happened in past are intermingled.

Stream of consciousness:
S.o.C is basically used in novels. “S.o.C” was first coined by a psychologist William James in his
book PRINCIPLES OF PSYCHOLOGY published in 1970. According to him, it is flow of
thoughts which goes through a human mind throughout the day,
This term was later adopted in literature through various characters in novels whose thoughts and
feelings were continuously depicted by writer. The thoughts and feelings may be logical or
illogical.
The novel which include such characters as protagonists are known as S.o.C novels. In such
novels the writer record all the mental activity which is happening in the mind of character.
S.o.C is also called “INTERIOR MONOLOG”. The S.o.C is used to give an insight into the
mind of a character. Sometimes the writer don’t use proper punctuation.
The writer who have used S.o.C frequently in their novels are
1. James Joyce
2. William Faulkner
3. The French novelist EDONARD Dujardin
4. Ernest Hemingway
5. VIRGINIA Woolf (female novelist)

William Faulkner
He was born in Mississippi in a state called New Albany in 1897.
