Question 1

a) State and explain in detail what is Coulomb’s Law (3 marks)

b) An electric potential field is produced by point charges 1 µC and 4 µC located


at (-2, 1, 5) and (1, 3, - 1 ) , respectively. What is the energy stored in the
field? (5marks)

c) A square plate described−2 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 2 , −2 ≤ 𝑦 ≤ 2, 𝑧 = 0 carries a charge


12|𝑦|mC/m2. Find the total charge on the plate and the electric field
intensity at (0, 0, 10). (5 marks)

d) If 𝑫 = (2𝑦 2 + 𝑧)𝒂𝒙 + 4𝑥𝑦𝒂𝒚 + 𝑥𝒂𝒛 C/m2, find: (9 marks)

i) The volume charge density at (— 1, 0, 3)

ii) The flux through the cube defined 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 1,0 ≤ 𝑦 ≤ 1, 0 ≤ 𝑧 ≤ 1

iii) The total charge enclosed by the cube

a) Explain in detail what is linear, isotropics and homogeneous dielectric

b) The resistance of round long wire of diameter 3 mm is 4.04 ohm/km. If a


current of 40 A flows through the wire, find: (10 marks)

i) The conductivity of the wire and identify the material of the wire
ii) The electric current density in the wire

a) Explain Faraday’s Law in detail. In Faraday’s experiments, what would be the


advantage of using coils with many turns? (5 marks)

b) State and explain using a picture, Lenz’s law in relation with Electromagnetic
Induction? (5 marks)

c) The north pole of a magnet is moved toward a copper loop, as shown below.
If you are looking at the loop from above the magnet, will you say the
induced current is circulating clockwise or counter clockwise? (2 marks)
