Althought I have understood from the BBC News Styleguide extract which are the main values

that guide the people working for BBC, the information provided by the BBC online guide
helped me to find out more details about what I already knew. BBC News Styleguide says that
accuracy and transparency are really important for the company, but it doesn’t do it giving as
many examples about how they obtain them. A phrase that impressed me from the site was
accuracy is more important than speed. It made me realize how much value is put in the process
of selecting and verifying the information. Compared to the most Romanian televisions, BBC
hardly tries to give fresh news without the risk of just spreading some unrealistic rumors. When
they take information directly from social media, they are first check its veracity (they compare
different sources, make sure that the producer of the information is reliable) and they are also
very concerned with copyright issues. I also liked their attempt to clearly explain the statistics
that they use (When our output includes statistics, we should explain the numbers clearly, put
them into context, weigh, interpret and, where appropriate, challenge them, present them clearly
and attribute them), so that people would correctly understand the data. Many of the details are,
as Marl Thompson, the Director General, observes, from the domain of common sense- for
example it is obvious, that is unacceptable to use production techniques that materially mislead
the audience about the reality of the narrative or events- but when they stand next each other
they give the bigger profile of a serious, exceptional company. However, a new thing for me was
related to the way in which BBC proceed when it comes to the materials received from children,
which are pre-verified by their parents who are announced when their kids upload something on
the BBC platform. Also, I didn’t know too many information about how BBC deals with
materials that shall be removed, thought they are stated as permanent.
