The seven steps

• Step 1 - Planning work

• Step 2 - Select work area and equipment

• Step 3 - Disconnect all input points and block against connection

• Step 4 - Check that the operating voltage is switched off

• Step 5 - Ground and short circuit

• Step 6 - Apply protection to nearby live parts

The Seven Steps that Save Lives
Step 1 - Planning work

• Implement electrical safety planning and risk management.

• Check that there is a clear work request / work order for the work.

• Check that the electrical conductor has drawn up the necessary operating order / connection slip and connection
confirmation, when required.

• Check that the electrician issues a work permit when required. Conduct exchange of
evidence.

• Check that personnel who are to perform the work have the appropriate knowledge and experience.

• Make sure that suitable tools are available.

• With the support of ABB's arc for the selection of arc protective clothing, perform a risk assessment for
arc, select and decide on the correct arc rated personal protective equipment (PPE), and associated
other protective equipment.

• Check together with the electrical operation manager that the single-line diagram reflects the current
system and that the established operating order / wiring diagram is in accordance with the current
single-line diagram.

• Begin the work of securing the workplace

Step 2 - Select work area and equipment

• Mark the work area with barriers and appropriate signage.

• Check that the equipment is in good condition.

• Use general judgment, sight and hearing, to identify risk areas.

• This may need to be repeated as the work progresses.

• Be focused on the task and avoid other activities that can be distracting, such as phone calls.

Step 3a - Disconnect all input points

• The equipment must be disconnected at all input points.

• Pay special attention to batteries, capacitors and parallel supplies.

• Perform necessary connections following a written model with trained and authorized personnel.

• When coupling, use the protective equipment identified in step one or perform the coupling from a safe
distance.

• If connections have been made by another, the electrical safety conductor must check that all input
points are separate.

Step 3b - Block against connection

• Apply the required protection against connection.

• Block against unintentional switches on / off.

• Locking can be done by locking the control mechanism.

• Block with padlock if possible.

• Always affix the sign "May not be operated - Work in progress".

Step 4 - Check that the operating voltage is switched off

• Use only an approved and controlled voltage tester to check that the operating voltage is
disconnected (de-energized).

• For inspection, use the protective equipment decided in step 1.

• Check that the voltage tester works both before and after the voltage check.

Step 5 - Ground and short circuit

• Stop and block grounding couplers where possible.

• Locking can be done by locking the control mechanism.

• Block with padlock if possible.

• Always affix the sign "May not be operated - Work in progress".

• In other cases or as an addition, apply the required working earths that ground and short circuit
at the workplace.

• Connect the earthing device first to earth and then to the primary conductors, disconnection takes place in reverse
order.

• When applying, use the protective equipment decided in step 1.

• If grounding and short circuits have been carried out by another, this must be checked by the electrical safety
conductor.

Step 6 - Apply protection to nearby live parts

• Take special care when work close to voltage.

• Ensure that the minimum safety distance can be maintained during work.

• Apply necessary shields.

• If necessary, apply blockages to doors or enclosures for live parts.

• Protection can consist of signage, screening, demarcation.

Step 7 - Make sure the workplace is safe and
establish a permit to start work

• Make sure that all input points are separated.

• Make sure that disconnectors, groundings and any doors or doors to live equipment are blocked /
locked and signposted.

• Ensure that all concerned understand blocking / locking procedures.

• Make sure that all existing earths are closed / applied correctly.

• Ensure that all concerned are aware of identified risks and how to deal with them.

• Ensure that the workplace is safe for further work.

• Give permission to start work.
