LUOKKAHUONEFRAASEJA – CLASSROOM PHRASES

TERVETULOA SUOMEN KIELEN ETAPPI 1 -KURSSILLE!
WELCOME TO FINNISH LANGUAGE STAGE 1 COURSE!
Welcome to continue your studies of Finnish. Hauska tavata taas! On this course you learn to tell more
about yourself: What you do on your free time, what kind of family you have, what is your typical day
like. You will learn vocabulary about family, free time, matters related to your studies, lots of verbs and
lots of new places. Some of the vocabulary will be on Quizlet for you to practice.
Focus is still on the everyday situations and dialogues, and on building the base for your language
skills. Yet there is more grammar on this course. The grammar will be first introduced for you to observe
and make your working theory first. After the working theory we will look at the more refined description
on the workings of the grammar. There will be videos in Moodle on some of the grammar topics as well.
You may watch the videos at any point of your studies. The videos will have more details than what will
be covered during the lesson. Reason why we do it like this? Learning process usually grows gradually,
and as teacher’s we have noticed that different people are ready for different pieces and bits of
grammars at different stages of their learning process. Grammar videos satisfy the need for grammar,
when you feel the need to hear about it.
On Moodle there will be more so called drill exercises for the grammar. These are under the
section optional tests. Again, you know best, how much you need this type of exercises. The mandatory
tests then will test on the same grammar matters. These are the only once you have to do during the
course.
During this course, the aim is to reach the A1.2 level of language proficiency scale.

to have -structure
There’s no verb ‘to have’ in Finnish language. Instead having something is expressed with a special
structure: case ending -lla/-llä + on. Not having is expressed the same way, only the verb changes to
negative: -lla/-llä + ei ole. And with the negative expression you need partitive with the noun! Personal
pronouns and question have special forms; otherwise you add the case ending to the name.

13
Kerrataan!
With the verbs harrastaa ‘to have as a hobby’, pelata ‘to play games’, soittaa ‘to play an instrument’, you
need to use partitive form with the object of the sentence. Thus these are partitive.
Ø What are the other partitive verbs? (Tip! Suomi-startti material page 39.)
____________________________________________________________________________________
Ø Look at the sentences 1–3 below. Figure out what is the basic form of the objects of the sentences.
You need to think about the rules of how to make partitive, but in reversed order.
Ø Add the basic forms in the chart below. When you are ready, translate the new words into English
with a help of dictionary.
