Teaching is a privilege as well as a huge responsibility.

Teaching is a profession that can

influence many lives and shape the future generation. My teachers influenced me to choose

the teaching profession. As a teacher it is my responsibility to help my students accomplish

their academic goals, inspire them to be better human beings, share my knowledge and

experiences to help them reach their highest potential.

To achieve these goals it is important for me to have a healthy relation with my students.

The relationship needs to be based on mutual respect for each other with certain limits. To

involve students actively in the learning process teachers need to have a class environment

where students feel their role in the class. As suggested by Parada (2018) in tutorial it is

important to appreciate students on their good behaviour. This helps the teachers to have a

two way relationship with students and create a positive environment for learning.

Encouragement directly affects the student performance in class.

It is vital to have a positive learning environment in class. Teachers come across a number of

students with different personalities and upbringing. It is important for teachers to design

lessons that are inclusive, engaging and that develop the interest of students in the subject.

Science teachers should be able to make context of what is thought in class to the real world

and help students understand the same. This makes student think about the concepts they

are learning and develop their interest in the subject.

Secondary students are in their adolescent, with a lot of things going on in their mind and it

is obvious that students would tend to misbehave in class. There are various reasons for

students to misbehave in class. Thus, it is important for teachers to identify the reason for

misbehaviour of students in class and intervene it. One of the approaches I would practice in

my teaching career is the choice theory approach and goal theory approach. According to
goal theory inappropriate behaviour is result of four mistaken goals: power, attention,

revenge and escape. According to this theory the goals of the students misbehaviour are

identified by the teachers and the teacher responds in a way which is not expected by the

student neither it discourages nor enables the students to achieve their goal. The next step

is to disclose the goal and if the student still continues to misbehave assert the social reality

keeping the student unaware of the effect it has on the teacher. The student is made aware

of the consequences of his misbehaviour and co-operative behaviour (De Nobile, Lyons &

Arthur-Kelly 2017). According to Lyons, Ford and Slee (2014) goal theory interventions are

effective in long term however they are not effective instantaneously. It is important for me

as a teacher to control my emotions and not get into a situation that I would regret getting

into later.

I intend to be consistent in management of the classroom and expectations from the

classroom. Adults prefer things that they can depend on likewise children and adolescent

like to depend on daily schedules and people. An effective classroom possesses these

consistent attributes of daily schedules and expectation. The teacher at the start of every

class makes clear to the students what is to be done in the class on the particular day and

what the teacher expects out of students during the course of the lecture. With clear

schedule and set of instructions the students know precisely how to start an exercise, what

is expected amid guideline and helpful learning exercises, and how to approach each change

and action. This allows both the teacher and students to focus on learning around the vital

parts of learning in a safe and agreeable condition.

The most important aspect of teaching is the need to make learning interesting and focus on

active-learning and activities that are student-centred. Teacher needs discover the
background knowledge and interest of the students at the earliest that would help teachers

to design their lessons accordingly to enhance the understanding and learning experience

for their students. It is important for a teacher to give information of the background of the

topic that is to be discussed in class so that students can relate to it. Moreover, it is

important to make teaching sessions interactive that would support the requirements of

various learners.

In teaching it is important to reflect on what you are teaching, how you are teaching, are

your teaching methods effective and so on. I plan to maintain a diary to note the points that

were fruitful and the points in the class that did not work as they were expected to. This

approach would help me to rectify my mistakes and plan to come up with a better plan.

Assistance from senior teachers towards my approach to the class may also be helpful in

maintaining the class decorum.

By nurturing a caring and positive environment, being clear in expectations and guidelines,

and developing student-centred and engaging activities my classroom should be a place

where students and the teacher develop. Reflection, analysis and peer-assistance I can

improve my teaching skills and make my classroom interactive and enjoyable.
