The material of construction of the pipe used is stainless steel AIS! 304 with thermal conductivity value of 16.263 Wim'K and having an inside diameter of 131.8 mm and outside diameter of 168.3 mm. The insulated piping line is, exposed to the environment at 30 °C and the heat transfer coefficient on its outer surface is estimated to be 15 Wim?-K. Calcium silicate with the thermal conductivity of 0.060 Wim-K is employed as the insulation material to minimize the heat loss and the thickness is 50 mm. a) Sketch the equivalent thermal resistance circuit of the system. Label the heat flux direction, temperatures and thermal resistances involved. (2 marks) b) Prove that the insulation thickness used is suitable to minimize the heat loss by using the concept of critical radius of insulation. (1 mark) ©) Calculate: i) Total resistance of the system. (9 marks) ii) Overall heat transfer coefficient of the system. (2 marks) iii) Heat loss of the system. (2 marks) iv) Inner and outer surface temperatures of the stainless steel pipe.
