If the two kings are not facing each other directly, we use a "waiting move" by moving our rook to a
safe square.

1. Rg7 this is a safe square because it’s far from the enemy king. 1...Ka8 2.Kb6 Kb8 have
forced the enemy king to step in front of our king, we can checkmate as in the Previous figure.

3. Rg8+#

In this position, no waiting move is needed since we have to bring our king closer.

Checkmate only occurs at the edge of the board, if the enemy is not at the edge, we have to force him there
using the same method described earlier. 1. Rh7+Kf8 2.Ke6Kg8 3.Ra7Kf8 4.Rb7 (The waiting move)

We know that in this pattern, we use a waiting move using our rook. While Giving a waiting move we
must see whose King is near to the Attacker Rook if Attacker King is near then placed a waiting to the
attacker king side only But if Defender King is attacking or near to the attacker rook then placed the
attacker rook near to the attacker king opposite to the defender king.

1. Rg6 (Here attacker King is near to the attacker rook, so we paced a waiting move near to the
attacker or own king) 1… Kc7 2.Kd5 Kb7 3.Kc5 Ka7 4.Kb5 Kb7 5.Rg7+ Ka8 6.Kb6 Kb8 7.Rg8#

How to Rook Checkmate:

1.

6. Rh6+ Kd7, Notice how we trapped the enemy in a smaller box.

7. Kc5 Ke7 8.Kd5 Kf7 9.Ke Black fights by refusing to go to the last rank, but we will force him

Avoid hanging your pieces!). 10. Ra6 Kf7 11. Rb6 (A waiting move so that if black plays Ke7, we can
push him further back with Rb7+)

11…Kg7 12.Kf5 Kh7 13.Kg5 Kg (We now use the rook to push the enemy even further.)

14. Rb7+ Kf8, The enemy is trapped in a smaller box. 15. Kf6 Ke8 16.Rh7 (Again waiting move.)

16… Kd8 17. Ke6 Kc8 18. Kd6 (Notice that if the two kings face each other it’s going to be game over because of
Rh8+ checkmate, so black is running away from the white king, but we will catch him).

18… Kb8 19. Kc6 Ka8 20. Kb6 Kb8 Checkmate is close. 21. Rh8#
