1801- Ireland becomes apart of the UK- Ireland was given to Great Britain under the act of
union

1804- Napoleon is crowned emperor of France- According to rumor, Napoleon snatched the
crown out of the pope’s hands and crowned himself to show his rebellion to the authority of
the pontiff.

1805- The tzar of Russia created a contract with Britain which would include the idea that
France should be kept as small as possible to minimize Napoleon’s power

1809- James Madison is sworn in as the 4th president of the USA- James Madison made
many contributions to the USA and is credited with writing 29 out of 85 of the federalist
papers

1812- USA declares war on Great Britain- President James Madison declared war on Great
Britain due to the oppression of sailors and them being forced into joining the British Royal
Navy. Also due to the fact that Britain blocked American havens so they were unable to do

1815- Duke of Wellington defeat’s Napoleon- The prussian army assisted in Napoleon's
defeat where Napoleon surrendered at Waterloo

Charles Darwin’s grandfather, Eramus Darwin had begun to study evolution which was
extremely controversial at the time-  Links with the controversial nature of Mary Shelley’s
book and the theme of change.

Dickens began to draw attention to the cruelty of the law in the early 19th century

People began to choose sides between the church and science, Honores de Balzac wrote
many novels on how society would crumble without the church- Could relate to the theme in
Frankenstein about playing God and going against the theory of creationism as Doctor
Frankenstein is able to use science to create life rather than relying on God.
