WHAT IS BIOLOGY
2.WHAT IS TAXONOMY
It is a branch of biology that deals with classification of animals and plants based on their
similarities and differences the word taxon is derived from a greek word taxis
3.WHAT IS ORNITHOLOGY
4.WHAT IS ZOOGEOGRAPHY
5.WHAT IS EVOLUTION
6.WHAT IS SYSTEMATICS
(OR)
The study diversification of living organisms both past and present that is the relationship
among the living being through time
7. ERNST MAYR:
Ernst mayr
9.WHAT WAS THE TITLE AWARDED TO ERNST MAYR DURING DURING HIS RETIREMENT
Ornithology , taxonomy ,zoogeography ,evolution ,systematics and the history and philosophy of biology
11.WHAT WERE THE THREE PRIZES WIDELY REGARDED AS THE TRIPLE CROWN OF BIOLOGY
Blazan prize in1983, international prize of biology in 1994, craford prize in 1999
Ernst mayr
Growth, reproduction, ability to sense the environment and respond to it are the unique features of
living organisms other than this metabolism , ability to self-replicate , self organize are some features
added to the above list.
ii) the twin characteristics of growth are increase in mass and increase in number of individuals
iii) multicellular organisms grow by cell division in plants .This growth by cell division occurs
continuously throughout the life but in animals only upto a certain age however cell division occurs in
certain tissues to replace the damaged cells in unicellular organisms also grow by cell division
It can be easily observed in vitro culture by simply counting the number of cells under the microscope
Non-living objects also grow if we take increase in body mass as a criteria for growth mountains
boulders and sand mountains too grow however this growth exhibited by non-living objects is by
accumulation of materials on the surface in living organisms the growth is from inside therefore growth
cannot be taken as the defineing property of living organisms
18.WHAT IS REPRODUCTION
Reproduction means the production of progeny possessing features more or less similar to those of
parents reproduction take place in two ways ,sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction fungi
reproduces through asexual spores ,yeast and hydra reproduces through budding ,planaria reproduces
through true regeneration .unicellular organisms like bactria ,amoeba undergo reproduction through the
method of fission (or) cell division
19. GROWTH AS EQULENT TO INCREASE IN CELL NUMBER (OR) MASS CAN BE SEEN IN WHAT TYPE OF
ORGANISMS
Unicellular organisms
Though reproduction is considered to be the defining character of living organisms that do not
reproduce such as mule, sterile worker bee, infertile human couple, etc of course non living organisms
are not capable of reproducing by themselves
21. DEFINE METABOLISM
All plants, animals, fungi and microbes exhibits metabolisms i.e. both unicellular and multicellular
organisms
All living organisms are made of chemicals these chemicals of various classes sizes function etc, are
constantly being made and changed into some other bio molecules these conversion of metabolic
reaction. Thousands of metabolic reaction occurs simentanously inside all living organisms the sum total
of all these chemical reaction occurring in living organisms is called metabolisms
22. METABOLIC REACTIONS ARE THE DISTINCTIVE FEATURE OF LIVING ORGANISMS- JUSTIFY THE
STATEMENT
Metabolism is the defining features of all living organisms without any exception, though isolated
metabolic reaction in vitro are not living things but surely living reaction can be demonstrated outside
the body of an organisms performed in testube may be neither living nor non living
23. WHICH IS THE MOST OBVIOUS AND DEFINING CHARACTERS OF A LIVING ORGANISMS
The ability to sense the environment which could be physical, chemical (or) biological
Human beings
25. WHAT ARE THE FACTORS THAT MAKES THE PLANT TO RESPOND
