Synergy 3 Quick Start Guide to Installation and Configuration I MAKE IT WORK

1 Introduction
This document provides an overview of the steps required to install and configure Synergy 3. Where further
or more in-depth steps are required, it refers the reader to other Synergy 3 documentation on the Synectics
Global Support Portal.

1.1 Scope and Conventions

This document uses the following convention and styles.

The following symbols are used to indicate important points and information:

Alert: Performing this action may affect system operation.

Note: Details useful information to consider.

Setup: A note of where in system setup a feature is controlled or configured.

Navigation around Synergy 3 is displayed as follows:

Views->Map Selection

This is an instruction to click on the Views menu, then the Map Selection button. Some navigation may start
at a tab, but end in a dialog.

Note: Three points, or an 'ellipsis' (…) in a button or option indicate that another dialog box will
appear when you click the button.

Synergy 3 is highly configurable to meet your operational needs; as such, the look of the user interface might
be slightly different than it appears in this manual, depending on your:
l Screen resolution or your workstation settings
l Permissions and security settings
l "Look and Feel" or customization settings

Contact your Synergy 3 system administrator for details on the tiers and functions that are licensed for your
system.

2 Installing Synergy 3
The Synergy 3 server requires a Database Management System (DBMS) to store configuration, alarms and
other system information.

The following database systems are supported:

l IBM DB2 is the default (and recommended) database supplied by Synectics.

If you intend to use IBM DB2, this will be installed automatically as part of the installation procedure.

l Microsoft SQL Server (MS-SQL) 2008 is also supported.

If your Synergy 3 server uses Microsoft SQL Server (MS-SQL), you must install MS-SQL before
you start this procedure.

Note: Support for other database systems will be made available over time. Contact Synectics for
more information (see Contact Information on page 1).

Double-click Synergy Setup. The installation wizard launches. You will need to install both the server and
client, depending on your requirements.

Once you have installed Synergy 3, you will be asked for a license. For information on licensing your product,
see the Synergy 3 License Activation Guide on the Synectics Global Support Portal.

2.1 Uninstalling Synergy 3

Open the Windows Start menu and navigate to the Control Panel.

Select Programs and Features and locate the Synergy 3 client application in the list.

Right-click and select Uninstall.

Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the procedure.

2.2 Upgrading Synergy 3

If you have Synergy 3 already installed, an upgrade installer is available for updating the client application to
the latest version.

For more information, contact Synectics (see Contact Information on page 9.).

3 Configuring Synergy 3
Once you have installed Synergy 3, you will automatically be prompted to run through the Client
Configuration Wizard. This is used to configure core aspects of your Synergy 3 client; for example,
specifying the ports and servers to be used for communication and failover.

Once you have completed this wizard, you can access Synergy 3. You will now need to configure it for use.
There are many features that can be configured but this generally entails setting up video recording,
connecting and positioning cameras and setting up alarms.

Most configuration is carried out from the Setup tab. Go to Setup->System Setup.

From here, you have two options:

l You can choose to do a set of related tasks using one of the wizards.
l You can go to the Advanced Configuration menus and work through tasks individually.

The Basic Configuration Wizard is designed to run you through the main configuration tasks once you are in
Synergy 3.

For more comprehensive information on Synergy 3 configuration, see the Synergy 3 documentation on the
Synectics Global Support Portal.
