Hardball tactics are techniques used to put pressure on opponents to do things they should not do
for certain reasons. Usually effective for less prepared consultants. The main goal of a negotiator is
to defeat the opponent. The situation of this negotiation is distributive in that it uses many powers
to influence and subjugate opponents such as threats, lawsuits, violence and punishment.
Competing or fighting strategies are strategies we often use when we are conflicted and trying to
resolve the conflict. Each party will try to force the other to agree to its will. One type of hardball
technique that has been used against me is chicken. Chicken tactic is to pretend to chicken out with
the hope that the opponents feel uneasy and eventually succumb to this dirty tactic. One day, I was
eating at a restaurant and all of a sudden a man in his 30s approached my dining table brought
pirate compact discs. He was about to sell it to me but I refuse to buy from him. After rejected from
me, this old man told me that he had money problems and his son was sick and left in the house
alone. I felt terrible for not buying his CDs. Finally, I bought from him and give him extra money.
Hence, I deal the hardball tactic with co-opt with opponent party.
