Religion occupies a very vast place in our lives and has played a formative role
in the shaping of our society through centuries. in lot of cultures, it has acted
as a guiding factor for their socio-cultural systems of faith and worship. Every
religion has a set of organised beliefs and practices, which is usually shared by
a whole community or group of people. It provides a sense of ultimacy and
transcendence for the rest of your life and beyond. There are thousands of
religions in the world which are all different from one another in some aspect
or the other but what makes them similar is the presence of Architecture
specially designed for religious expression.
-Sacral Architecture
Throughout history, we have seen Architecture being expressed most
profoundly in religious spaces, and this has allowed them to become influential
places in every society. It concerns the design and construction of places of
worship or sacred spaces, such as churches, mosques, stupas, synagogues,
temples etc. The absolute and most prominent design works since the
beginning of time have been at the service of religion, driven by the need to
develop spaces where mankind could be one bit nearer to a higher power. One
thing that is common to all Sacral Architecture is that they are meant to exude
certain qualities that evokes a sense of timelessness, and reinforces a sense of
faith and belief in visitors.

Religion plays a huge part in the world's political and socio - cultural discourse
and in his book, Transcending Architecture, Julio Bermudez claims that
“Architecture has the ability to turn geometric proportions into shivers, stone
into tears, rituals into revelation, light into grace, space into contemplation,
and time into divine presence.”
*TOWARDS A CHANGE
We live in an age of reason and constant change. Religion today is mostly used

as a tool for political gain in almost all the major nations, religious leaders
sometimes taking on the role of cheerleaders for political ideologies, and this
has pushed it towards an inevitable decline. We see a considerable increase in
the number of people who do not identify themselves to an organized religion,
and instead affiliating themselves as having no religion.
These so-called “Nones” consists of a set of people who subscribe to larger
humane concerns in the world today and are of the overwhelming belief that
we should all be ‘open’ to diversity and equality. Although their attraction to
religion has decreased, they still believe in ‘values’ and ‘personal faith’. They are
more accepting of the fact that religious ideas are on the decline and that
notion of a supreme higher force or extraordinary power will in the end
become a relic of times gone by. This idea of personal Faith has detached itself
from religion for the better and in many places all over the world, it's role in
public life is ontherise.Itis thus paramount for us to rethink the architecture of sacred spaces in new
light and reconsider its many possibilities. People across the world have
developed highly individualized, institutionally unsupported ways of worship
and sacred spaces are no longer exclusively in the realm of religion and have
become much more secular in nature. There is a change in the perception of
secularism from its strictest sense as well. The new ‘Secular’ does not
necessarily mean having a control over religion anymore, but instead it points
towards the managing of diversities. It acts as an umbrella for future ideas that
brings together synergies rather than isolate communities.

wy* OPPORTUNITY
With more people choosing this new lifestyle now more than ever, it is
necessary to acknowledge this move towards creating areligious and secular
spaces that hold no religious biases- A Place of Faith. There has to be a push
to understand what qualities these spaces should convey—timelessness,
awe, silence and devotion, what Louis Kahn called the “immeasurable” and
Le Corbusier called the “ineffable” and understand if they are still relevant.
As Architects, we have a massive opportunity to reimagine and design a new
typology of space that encompasses the ideas of the sacred, evokes the
same emotions and beliefs and has the ability to reinforce the idea of Secular
or personal faith, without any religious connotations

Participate on www.archdai:The physical requirement for the participants is to design a Place of Faith that
acts as a sanctuary for the secular world. The physical manifestation of this is
open to interpretation. We encourage the participants to develop their
program themselves. In simplistic terms, the aim is imagining a space thatis
Sacrosanct*,
The people who come here will remain true to their own religion, continue to
draw from its power, and engage in peaceable dialogue with one another
and with members of the world’s secular population.
Participants have to reimagine a typology of space that draws clues from
traditional sacred architecture and explore the qualitative aspects of it
rather than just the form making. The competition aims to strengthen the
secular beliefs of the community and celebrate diversity through design.
The design should exude completeness and a feeling of oneness between
humans and nature through the medium of faith and must be Qualitative,
Atmospheric and Experiential. The emphasis should be on the need for all of
humanity to come together and realise that we are connected in ways that
we didn’t know before and all our boundaries are a creation of our
societal prejudices and ways.
Participants are encouraged to look at it as an experiment and not rely on
past precedents. The architectural expression could be anything that a
participant deems fit and there are no restrictions in terms of scale, heights
etc.
