INTERNS/YOUNG STATISTICIANS
Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) is a corporate body established under
the Statistics Act (2006). It is the principal Government agency responsible for
the collection, compilation, analysis, publication and dissemination of official
statistical information and its custody. It also oversees the coordination,
supervision and development of programmes within the National Statistical
System.

Kenya National Bureau of Statistics in partnership with Statistics Sweden invites


applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the following positions for
Interns/Young Statisticians: -

Job Title: Young Statistician, Gender Statistics


Positions: 1

Terms of Service: Temporary (12 months)

Job Purpose: Reporting to the Senior Officer, Gender Statistics, the Young
Statistician will undertake identified programmes and activities of Gender
Statistics Unit in Population and Social Statistics Directorate.
Duties and responsibilities
i. Assisting in the development and review of data collection tools;
ii. Collecting, collating, compiling, analyzing, validating and reviewing sex
disaggregated data;
iii. Following up data requests from data producers and responding to data
users requests;
iv. Assisting in the preparation of technical reports such as the Economic
Survey, Statistical Abstract and other technical publications;
v. Assisting in the preparation of the dissemination plan for gender statistics;
vi. Assisting in designing gender statistics modules for various sample surveys;

Job Title: Intern, Demography Statistics


Positions: 1

Terms of Service: Temporary (12 months)

Job Purpose: Reporting to the Assistant Manager Demography, the Intern will
undertake identified programmes and activities of the Demography Statistics
section in Population and Social Statistics Directorate.
Duties and responsibilities
i. Participating in collection and collating of population, demographic and
vital statistics data and ad-hoc survey data;

Job Title: Young Statistician Quarterly Business Indicators Unit


Positions: 1

Terms of Service: Temporary (12 months)

Job Purpose: Reporting to the Manager, Production, the Young Statistician will
participate in the implementation of identified programmes and activities of
Quarterly Business Indicators Unit in Production Directorate.

Duties and Responsibilities


i. Participating in data collection follow-ups;
ii. Participating in identification of QBI Establishments and institutions for the
purpose of distributing, completing and collecting Questionnaires every
quarter;
iii. Updating QBI sample frame/cleaning the frame;
iv. Attending all BEE/QBI technical meetings and compiling minutes/reports;
v. Conducting QBI survey data entry, analysis and tabulation.;
vi. Assisting in QBI report writing and dissemination;
vii. Developing reports for given assignments;
viii. Working closely with the Mentor, Supervisor and colleagues to implement
programmes and activities of the Directorate;
ix. Assisting in preparing for planned events and activities by developing and
assembling information and necessary materials;
x. Acquiring relevant skills in areas of specialization;

Job Title: Intern Labour Statistics


Positions: 1

Terms of Service: Temporary (12 months)

Job Purpose: Reporting to the Manager Labour Statistics, the Intern will
participate in the implementation of identified programmes and activities of the
Labour Statistics Unit in Production Directorate.

Duties and Responsibilities;

i. Participating in updating and maintaining the records on Labour


establishments;
ii. Assisting in the implementation of establishment based statistical surveys
undertaken by the Division;
iii. Participating in preparation of monthly and quarterly reports;
iv. Assisting in responding to data requests;
v. Assisting in dissemination of data prepared by the Division;
vi. Working closely with the Mentor, Supervisor and colleagues to implement
programmes and activities of the Directorate;
vii. Assisting in preparing for planned events and activities by developing and
assembling information and necessary materials;
viii. Participating in Directorate, Divisional and Sectional meetings and
trainings;

Job Title: Young Statistician, National Accounts

Job Purpose: Reporting to the Manager, National Accounts, the Young Statistician
will participate in the implementation of programmes and activities of the
Macroeconomics Directorate and specifically the National Accounts Section.
Duties and Responsibilities;
i. Participating in the development of various data collection
instruments/tools;
ii. Assisting in the preparation and dissemination materials for surveys ;
iii. Participating in data collection and compilation on National Accounts
Statistics;
iv. Working closely with the Mentor, Supervisor and colleagues to
implement programmes and activities of the Directorate;
v. Assisting in preparing for planned events and activities by developing
and assembling information and necessary materials;
vi. Participating in Directorate, Divisional and Sectional meetings and
trainings;
vii. Undertaking duties at the Headquarters and in the Field, as required;
viii. Seeking information from appropriate sources including the Mentor,

Job Purpose: Reporting to the Manager Macroeconomics, the Intern will
participate in the implementation of programmes and activities of the
Macroeconomics Directorate and specifically the Tourism and Immigration
section.
Duties and Responsibilities;

i. Participating in data collection and compilation of Tourism and


Immigration Statistics, and information;
ii. Participating in the development of various data collection instruments and
tools;
iii. Assisting in the collection and analysis of Tourism & Migration data ;
iv. Assisting in the collection and analysis of hotel and conference statistics;
v. Editing of Tourism & Migration and hotel and conference filled
questionnaires ;
vi. Participating in data entry of edited Tourism & Migration and hotel
questionnaires;
vii. Developing reports for given assignments;
viii. Working closely with the Mentor, Supervisor and colleagues to implement
programmes and activities of the Directorate;
ix. Assisting in preparing for planned events and activities by developing and

Job Title: Young Statistician, Statistical Business Register and Quality


Assurance
Positions: 1

Terms of Service: Temporary (12 months)

Job Purpose: Reporting to the Assistant Manager Field Services, the Young
Statistician will participate in the implementation of programmes and activities of
the Methods and Standards Directorate and specifically the Statistical Business
Register and Quality Assurance unit.
Duties and Responsibilities;
i. Assisting in classifications of units in the Statistical Business Register (SBR);
ii. Assisting in updating records and improvement of the SBR;
iii. Participating in development of tools for National Quality Assurance
Framework (NQAF);
iv. Participating in statistical quality assessments and statistical audits of
processes within KNBS and National Statistical System (NSS);
v. Working closely with the Mentor, Supervisor and colleagues to implement
programmes and activities of the Directorate of Statistical Coordination
and Methods;
vi. Participating in Directorate, Divisional and Sectional meetings and
trainings;
vii. Undertaking duties at the Headquarters and in the Field, as required;

Job Title: Intern Supply Chain Management
Positions: 1

Job Purpose: Reporting to the Assistant Manager Supply Chain Management, the
Intern will participate in the implementation of programmes and activities of the
Director General’s Office and specifically the Supply Chain Management
Division.
Duties and Responsibilities;
i. Assisting in the implementation of the procurement plan;
ii. Assisting in Preparation of Request for Quotation documents, tender
documents and contract documents;
iii. Participating in Preparation of Professional Opinion’s;
iv. Ensuring implementation of ISO QMS in the Department;
v. Assisting in updating and Maintenance of supplier data base and Updating
pre-qualification list of suppliers- AGPO group;
vi. Participating in secretariat services in Supply Chain Management
Committees;
vii. Participating in preparation of Tender close and opening minutes,
evaluation reports and analysis of Request for Quotation (RFQs);
viii. Developing reports for given assignments;
ix. Working closely with the Mentor, Supervisor and colleagues to implement

Job Title: Young Statistician, Strategy and Planning

Job Purpose: Reporting to the Manager Strategy and Planning, the Young
Statistician will participate in the implementation of programmes and activities
in the Strategy and Planning Division.
Duties and Responsibilities;

i. Assisting in preparation of quarterly and annual performance contract


reports
ii. Assisting in monitoring implementation of strategic plan
iii. Assisting in updating of statistics products register
iv. Assisting in generating monthly performance reports
v. Assisting in coordinating implementation of Management Systems
vi. Acquiring relevant skills in areas of specialization;
vii. Participating in Sectional meetings and trainings;
viii. Seeking information from appropriate sources including the Mentor,

Job Purpose: Reporting to the Manager ICT, the Young Statistician will participate
in the implementation of identified programmes and activities of ICT Division.
Duties and Responsibilities;
i. Assisting in designing, implementing and administering server systems,
facilities and services in line with established policies, standards and
procedures;
ii. Monitoring and fine-tuning the performance of Network/Systems
infrastructure;
iii. Assisting in the installation, maintenance and support of networked
devices, desktop Computers, Laptop computers, scanners, printers and
tablets;
iv. Developing reports for given assignments;
v. Working closely with the Mentor, Supervisor and colleagues to implement
programmes and activities of the Directorate;

will participate in the implementation of identified programmes and activities of
Human Resource Division.

Duties and Responsibilities: -


i. Assisting in maintaining the Bureaus’ skills inventory;
ii. Assisting in administering training needs Assessment and Training
Impact Assessment questionnaires;
iii. Assisting in implementing the Bureaus’ training plan;
iv. Ensuring activities of the section are documented on continuous basis;

Job Purpose: Reporting to the Manager Administration, the Intern will participate
in the implementation of identified programmes and activities of Administration
Division.

Duties and Responsibilities:-


i. Assisting in verifying accuracy of fleet and logistics information and
entering into database;
ii. Assisting in preparation of administration work plan;
iii. Assisting in managing the Bureau’s fixed assets register;
iv. Developing reports for given assignments;
v. Working closely with the Mentor, Supervisor and colleagues to
implement programmes and activities of the Directorate;
vi. Assisting in preparing for planned events and activities by developing
and assembling information and necessary materials;

Job Purpose: Reporting to the Manager Finance and Accounts., the Intern will
participate in the implementation of programmes and activities of the Finance
and Accounts Division;
Duties and Responsibilities:-
i. Assisting in processing payments for creditors and other suppliers;
ii. Assisting in carrying out verification of payment documents;
iii. Assisting in managing the Bureau’s fixed assets register on matters relating to
additions, depreciation, and disposal;
iv. Assisting in controlling and maintaining staff Imprests and advances records;
v. Developing reports for given assignments;
vi. Working closely with the Mentor, Supervisor and colleagues to implement
programmes and activities of the Directorate;
vii. Assisting in preparing for planned events and activities by developing and
assembling information and necessary materials;

Job Purpose: Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Communications, the Intern


will participate in the implementation of programmes and activities of the
Communications Division.
Duties and Responsibilities:-

i. Assisting in managing relationships with general public, media, opinion


leaders, NGO’s and KNBS stakeholders;
ii. Participating in implementation of KNBS’ advocacy and communication
strategies for advertising and data dissemination programmes;
iii. Assisting the supervisor in managing internal communications to ensure
employees are aware of changes and projects within the Bureau;
iv. Participating in the Management of front office, external data requests and
customer service;
v. Participating in the preparation of website content and handling the social
media;
vi. Developing reports for given assignments;
vii. Working closely with the Mentor, Supervisor and colleagues to implement
programmes and activities of the Directorate;
viii. Assisting in preparing for planned events and activities by developing and
assembling information and necessary materials;
ix. Acquiring relevant skills in areas of specialization;

Requirements for Appointment

i. Must be a Kenyan citizen;


ii. Must have attained a minimum 2nd Class Honors Degree from a
recognized institution within the last two years in any of the following
disciplines:- Communication, Public Relations, International Relations or
any other related qualifications from a recognized institution;
Additional information for applicants:
i. Should not be engaged in another organization;
ii. Should not have undertaken any other internship or been exposed to
work;
iii. Experience in their area of specialization, after graduation;
iv. Must be computer literate;
v. Must be available full time for the twelve months’ duration of the
program;
vi. Should possess interpersonal and communication skills;
vii. Must be goal oriented and dynamic;
viii. Should possess strong analytical skills;
ix. Should possess unquestionable integrity; and be
x. Goal oriented, dynamic, self-driven and diligent
xi. Should attach a copy of Certificate of Good conduct or an indication of
having applied for one;
xii. Take note that the monthly stipend for Young Statisticians is
Ksh.30, 000 and Kshs. 25,000 for Interns. Applicable statutory
deductions will apply
