Special tools and test equipment
3249 hex ball socket
Removing
- Remove bumper Repair Manual, Body

Exterior, Repair Group 63 .
- Remove two Torx bolts -1- (T30).

Tightening torque: 6 Nm (53 in. lb)
- Remove inner Torx bolt (T30) using 200 mm
(8 in.) extension.
Tightening torque: 6 Nm (53 in. lb)
- Loosen bolt using 3249 hex ball socket -3
- Disconnect headlight multi-pin connectors.
- Rotate headlight -2- toward center of vehicle and
remove headlight.

Installing
- Measure distance -a- at plastic

bolt of old headlight. (Important)
- Adjust distance -a- at plastic bolt
on new headlight.
- To install headlight, first engage

lug -1- in guide -2-.
- Install in reverse order of removal.
- Position headlight to maintain
even spacing relative to body
panels.
- After headlight is installed, adjust
headlights Page 94-8 .

Note:
Before manually adjusting gas

discharge headlights use the VAG
1551 scan tool to check DTC
memory, erase DTC memory, and
run basic settings Page 01-239 .
Adjustment screws for left headlight
1 - Height adjustment screw

2 - Lateral and height adjustment
screw
- For height adjustment, turn
adjustment screws -1- and -2-
with same number of turns until
headlight beam is OK.
Note:
The arrangement for the right

headlight adjustment is the reverse
of the left headlight.

Headlight bulbs, replacing
Low beam bulb (halogen headlight),

replacing
Removing
- For right headlight, remove rear part of air intake

duct.
- Remove cover from headlight housing.
- Remove connector -2- for low beam bulb.

- Remove wire clamp -1- and take bulb out of
housing.
Installing
- Install new bulb in housing.
CAUTION!
Do not touch the glass part of the bulb with

bare hands.
- Secure base of bulb with wire clamp.

- Reinstall connector and install cover on
headlight housing.
- Secure cover on housing with wire retainers.

Low beam bulb (high intensity gas discharge

lamp), replacing
WARNING! HIGH VOLTAGE!
Before working on components marked with

yellow high voltage symbols, be sure to
disconnect the battery after determining the
correct coding for the anti-theft radio.
Removing

duct.
- Disconnect electrical connector -1- for gas

discharge bulb by turning it counterclockwise.
- Remove retainer -2- on gas discharge bulb by
turning it counterclockwise.
- Remove bulb.

Installing
- Install retainer -1- on lugs of gas

discharge bulb -3- and insert with
both notches (arrows). Now
secure by turning clockwise.
- Connect electrical connector and
reinstall cover on headlight
housing.
Igniter for gas discharge lamp -

Removing
- Remove cover for headlight

housing.
- Disconnect electrical connector -

1- for gas discharge bulb- by
turning it counterclockwise.

- Loosen grommet -1- in headlight

cover by pushing down on lugs,
(arrows).
- Now guide connector for gas
discharge bulb through opening of
cover.
- Disconnect electrical connector -

1- from igniter for high intensity
gas discharge lamp.
- Remove bracket -2- for igniter by
removing screw (arrow).
- Remove igniter from housing.

- Disconnect connector -1-.

- Disengage wire clamp -2- and remove bulb from
housing.
Installing
- Install new bulb in housing.
CAUTION!
Do not touch the glass part of the bulb with

- Reconnect electrical connectors and install
cover on headlight housing.
- Secure cover with wire retainers.

from housing.
Installing

- To install, turn bulb holder to stop.

Headlight beam adjusting motors -V48

and -V49-, removing and installing
Note:
If the headlight beam adjusting motors are

removed and installed, readjust the headlights
Page 94-8 .
Removing

duct.
- Remove cover for headlight housing.
- Release right headlight beam adjusting motor (

V49-) -1- by turning it clockwise,
counterclockwise for left headlight beam
adjusting motor (-V48-).
- Release ball joint for right headlight beam
adjusting motor rod by pushing to left (for left
headlight beam adjusting motor, push to right).
- Disconnect electrical connector -2-.
Installing
- Connect electrical connector -2-.

- Push in ball of adjustment rod into ball joint at
reflector.
- Secure adjusting motor by turning it into position.

Step motor for headlight adjustment,

Note:
If the step motor for the head light adjustment is

removed and reinstalled, adjust the head lights
Page 94-8 .
Removing
- Pull off the air intake channel at the rear of the

right head light.
- Remove housing cover from head light

housing.
- Disconnect electrical harness connector -

- Loosen both Phillips head screws -2-.
- Remove ball head of adjusting axle by sliding to
side from ball head mount.
- Remove the step motor -3- from the housing.
Installing

Headlight housing repair kit, installing
Notes:
Headlight mounting tabs that have broken off

can be replaced by installing the repair kit.
Complete replacement of the headlight is
therefore not necessary.
For the A6 a repair kit for the right and left side
headlight is available.
Left (Part No. 4B0 998 121)
Right (Part No. 4B0 998 122)
- Remove the headlight with the broken mount.
- Remove the remaining parts of the broken

mount -1- at the mark marked by the arrow.
- Place the mount -2- of the repair kit to the edge
(arrow) of the headlight housing and secure it
with the two screws -3- from behind.

Headlights, removing and installing

Special tools and test equipment

- Remove bumper Repair Manual, Body
